Looks like the #i486 #CPU architecture is being put out to pasture soon within the #Linux kernel. ā€‹

Linux 7.1 Expected To Begin Removing i486 CPU Support

It's finally time: a patch queued into one of the development branches ahead of the upcoming Linux 7.1 merge window is set to finally begin the process of phasing out and ultimately removing Intel 486 CPU support from the Linux kernel

@claudiom but what about mah 75 year old mail server!?!
@fiend_unpleasant Welp, you know what you'll have to do.... ā€‹ā€‹

@fiend_unpleasant

Wait... You had an i486 server 75 years ago?!?!

One of my first laptops was an i486, and I am not 75 years old! šŸ¤“

#NetBSD to the rescue!!

@ParadeGrotesque Of course! ā€‹

I know! What's not to like, right?! šŸ˜‰ šŸž ā˜•

@claudiom

Oh, stuff is going to crash. Things we never even knew about. Some Linux Netware server running in the walled up closet of an abandoned Topeka mall is gonna crash and the stock market, AWS BGP routes, and this one shoe store in Weehauken will all just stop working.  ā€‹

NetBSD is a great option, but I’d probably just keep Linux 6.6 (or 6.18 while it still runs).
For non-critical use, even an EOL LTS kernel is fine.

And Slackware still does 32-bit properly (15.0 and -current), which helps a lot.

@r1w1s1

Kinda disagree: Slackware 15 (and Linux in general) can be slow, even on old 64 bits machine, and I kind of worry it will soon be unusable on 32 bits machine.

NetBSD is still much lighter than most Linux(es).

@claudiom

@ParadeGrotesque Really? Slackware slow? That surprises me quite a bit. @r1w1s1

@claudiom @r1w1s1

I know. But, to be fair, I have to update that machine to a slightly better configuration and ditch the HDD for a nice SSD before I pronounce it obsolete.

Just another project I can never find the time and funds to complete... Shame on me... šŸ˜”
