Anyone know offhand what type this connector is? I'm sure I've seen this type of thing somewhere before but can't figure out what it is.

Update: found! https://hachyderm.io/@RealGene/116358761857241642

Given the application (space) it's possible it's entirely custom, but I could swear I've seen it somewhere else before is why I asked.

Edit: ... has a wizard to help identifying connectors

Book about electronic connectors

@EndlessMason Yep, I wasn't able to find anything applicable there.
@sen hell, I don't even know which "gender" that connector is

@sen Let's face it, a little mystery spices things up a little...

Maybe this thing is descended from Aviation connectors?

I can't find a price for the shell, but each quadrax connector that fits inside it seems to go for about $100 in low quantities, which seems about right for aerospace!
Found a price for the equivalent connector from another company (slightly different design but still 4x quadrax connectors in a vaguely D-ish shell), CAD$1850 each in qty 25.
@sen looks aerospace? no idea though, some sort of multi-DIN thing
@gsuberland the mistake connector
@dysfun @gsuberland they have many LEMO at least, some of them visible on the livestream.
@gsuberland It is aerospace yeah, I should have specified that! It looks almost like some cores of M8s in a rectangular shell.
@gsuberland @sen
There are quadaxial connectors (like from Fakra) and there are quadruple-Connectors, but a quadruple-quadaxial never crossed my way.

@adorfer @gsuberland @sen whats the rationale behind quadrax I really wonder what sense it makes from a signal integrity perspective.

Triax, shielded diffpair, coax, ok. But quadrax???

@f4grx @adorfer @gsuberland it looks like they’re not what you might think when you hear “quadrax”, rather a lighter alternative to twisted pair with four wires inside a shield. https://www.gore.com/products/quad-cables-aerospace-defense-air-land I suspect this connector has two redundant gigabit Ethernet paths on it, since the vehicle it’s on is TTEthernet-based.
Quad Cables for Aerospace, Defense Air & Land Applications | Gore

GORE® Quad Cables offer tighter skew requirements with low crosstalk and controlled impedance ideal for high-speed serial data and video protocols. Lighter and more rugged, these quadrax cables feature dual differential pairs that routinely transfer bi-directional signals at speeds up to 1 GHz at lengths up to 30 meters (100 feet).

@gsuberland @sen hey, the one thing you can't accuse DIN connectors of is being rotationally invariant in their contact arrangement! (this might seriously be a group of mini IEC connectors or something)
@gsuberland @sen in my imagination they are on the Artemis II 😂
@webhat @gsuberland If you mean "they" being the connector, that is true. If you mean _I_ am onboard, you are, sadly, incorrect :)
@sen @gsuberland asking for a friend 😂🤣
@sen looks like something you'd find on older optical test equipment? What's the device you've found this on?
@sen Could be something like the ODU-MAC system. At least the 4pin connector parts look like something ODU or Fischer would build
@fkreiner whoa, I've been a Connector Enthusiast for years and had never heard of ODU! Thank you, I'm definitely going to spec some of these into a project someday :D It sure does look like their kind of thing.
@sen I think ODN is Optical Distribution Network in this context and it *kind* of looks like a splitter port but looks curiously not-optical?
@msh Onboard Data Network, in this case! It's an Orion part, and no optical involved with this specific bit as far as I'm aware.

@Kye Huh yeah, it's sort of a similar idea, but the retention and orientation keying method are both different.
@sen
Wow, I've never seen a gas powered PC before
😁
@lemonlolita Not sure what you mean?
@sen Looks like someone put multple Lemo 4 pin connectors in a single rectangular housing

@sen

I remember having seen them on some website recently. However, then I was looking for expanded beam fiber connectors. Maybe use that as a starting point for looking?

Utilizing a multi-finger ground spring fixed around the shell to provide a multi-point contact engagement that affords superior EMI shielding.

@RealGene aaaa that's it thank you so much! It even says they're available in 4x quadrax so that's the one. How did you ever find that?
@sen
Google Assistant. It has a "circle the thing" tool, which returns an AI summary (usually wrong or incomplete) and matching images. It actually matched to an image in a PDF hosted on Tom's Hardware, which was a product brochure from Smiths Interconnect / Molex.
@adorfer Such a pretty connector, thanks for sharing that :)
@bhasic @sen Where does the madness end? (this is apparently a D38999 connector, found on a connectorsupplier.com webpage)
@sen Aerospace standard for network cables. military norm. also known as Quatrax D-type. The official DMC tool name for crimping is the K709.
