*waves at everyone else in this echo chamber, which actually makes it a delightful place for civilized discussion*.

Apparently the fediverse is not a place for people to debate different opinions about technology.

That is untrue. I even saw someone using emacs the other day.

More seriously, if someone wants to set up an instance dedicated to discussions about AI, they can.

If they want to set up an account on someone else's server and toot about AI, they can, assuming that the server rules permit it.

They can share their opinions to their heart's content.

What they cannot do is ensure that anyone else engages with them, boosts them, makes them feel important etc.

I unfollow people who post about vibe coding / slop / AI, and mute or block if needed.

I'm a lawyer.

I was due to be replaced by AI ages ago.

@neil I don't think an AI could ever replicate your humour.
@neil We're sort of assuming you have not been... 🙂
@neil Judging by all the media stories, lawyers are safe for now. Judges, however, are having a hard time with all the fake case law references.

@neil

If we have to have AI cranks online, I'd prefer this type 😉

@neil Yes, we've seen how well that's going.
@neil At this point, it’s a bit like a cult predicting The Rapture (with Susskind as High Priest). I’m pretty sure now that I’ll be retired before they come for us.

@TheCybermatron

Oh, absolutely. I wonder how many copies of books about the end of lawyers were sold to lawyers...

@neil But... numbers!

@neil this is a tricky one; I'm aware I occasionally toot about AI things, often critical but not in the more traditional, puritanical fediverse manner. The fact you can (I think!) still see me suggests I manage to keep it to replies or at an acceptable level, but I'm aware I sail close to the wind.

I am aware I self-censor around it, because of the general mood; I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Perhaps I should make sure to CW such things? 🤔

@ahnlak It is more the "I vibe coded this! Isn't it amazing! I didn't stop to think of the environment or the licenses of the input works. I got a computer to draw this!" toots which bug me.

@neil yes, I think the fanatical praise of what is, to be charitable, a pretty flawed tool with limited scope, is deeply annoying - especially as the ones with such toots are rarely open to other opinions.

I find it remarkable that people don't comprehend that "I vibe coded this" reads exactly the same as "I copy-pasted this from a random StackOverflow post" :)

@neil I believe Scott's point was about vocal purity testing rather than anything specifically about AI though. I agree your method of handling unwanted content in your feed is perfectly fine - but as can be seen in the comments to this post that's not what it's about.

@neil Shouldn't you be using CW/filters for this - it's perhaps bullying to tell other people what to write about, as long as they follow the conventions of the platform to use tags and/or CW.

@penguin42

> it's perhaps bullying to tell other people what to write about, as long as they follow the conventions

Not sure I follow - I've explicitly said that people can write about whatever they like, as long as it is consistent with their server's rules?

@neil But you're suggesting that should be on a server dedicated to it; then talking about blocking or muting people who talk about one thing you dislike. I agree if that's most of what they talk about; but people have multiple interests;no one suggests you should post pictures of big (fake) guns on one server, sex legals on another, and tech on a third; Building fences around people who say one thing you dislike is not tolerant; it's what would get people talking about sex thrown out in many.

@penguin42

> you're suggesting that should be on a server dedicated to it; then talking about blocking or muting people who talk about one thing you dislike.

No, again: I said one *can* do that, or that one can use an account on an existing server. The same options that exist for everyone.

I'm sorry, but it feels like you reading what you want to read into what I said, rather than reading what I actually said.

@penguin42

But, to be absolutely clear, if someone does not want to see someone tooting about Linux and Free software, or about Airsoft, or about legal stuff, or bad jokes, or whatever else I toot which they dislike, be it the majority of what I toot or just for one single toot, they are absolutely free to unfollow me, mute me, or block me. That is their prerogative.

@neil @penguin42 aarrhgh! You used the word “the” – how dare you!
@neil Nah, I wouldn't want to miss the jokes!

@penguin42

Well, there is that...

But I don't take blocks personally, but rather an indication of someone setting their boundaries, which is just fine :)

@penguin42 He's not telling other people what to write about. He's telling people what he'll bother to read. Very different thing.

@neil

@neil

'I unfollow people who post about vibe coding / slop / AI, and mute or block if needed'.

Hmm. While I don't post purely about AI, I do have a blog post sitting in 'Drafts' about my personal, real-life experiences with Claude and Copilot.

I was (am) pretty sceptical but take the view that I can not simply and mindlessly dismiss all AI as 'AI slop'.

Would this meet your criteria for un-following?

@andyc I am still following you, so I guess that it has not bothered me sufficiently!
@neil Probably because you can't see inside my Drafts folder.

I guess the thought of interacting only with AI guys is depressing even for AI guys.

@neil

@duke_of_germany

*Claude has entered the chat*

@neil This hits the nail on the head for me.

It's very much the free speech thing: You can totally say whatever you want, but you're not guaranteed an audience. No one has to stick around and listen. This is social media, not your team's standup.
