Ok so hear me out: AI datacenter, but on the moon!

@jerry Someone already thinking about that, since last year 😬

The plans to put data centres into orbit and on the moon

Proponents say space-based data centres will be more secure, but sceptics say big hurdles remain.

@AmmarSpaces bah. All the good ideas are already taken
@jerry how about we just put Kevin O Leary there?
@jerry only if we let the billionaires oversee them in person
@jerry Synergy! Add some villas, and surprise people with freemium supply services!
@jerry all the permits are on the dark side  πŸŒš
@kwayk42 it’s true. The Death Star was a big AI datacenter and the anti-AI terrorists were constantly trying to derail progress on the Empire’s AI initiatives.
@jerry That explains why they needed that thermal exhaust port

@jerry What if we stopped building them altogether.

Repurpose the ones we do have.

We already have some good models. We don't need anymore.

@majorlinux I am not defending this as I say it, but today’s datacenters are not built for the scale and power density that companies are targeting now.

@jerry My argument is to say we don't need the datacenters at all.

If we aren't training as much (if at all anymore), then we can scale back.

@majorlinux nothing I’ve seen gives me any confidence it’s going to slow down. I do expect the bubble to burst some day but there will still be datacenters of this scale after the crash. Likely less of them, but they’ll still be around. I’m hoping that a better way to operate them emerges that doesn’t require so much compute to train them.

@jerry That's really what I'm hoping for.

I honestly think that if we just scaled this shit down to something reasonable, a lot of what's happening could be curbed.

Actually put some real costs to using the tools and restrict the proliferation of it amongst people who are currently abusing it.

@jerry makes more sense than orbital, but regolith is a bitch and a half

@jerry My idea is an AI datacenter on a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Keep the AA guns, add drones to the flight deck = protected nuclear powered AI datacenters!

(edit typos)

@jerry it's kind of hard to radiate heat without atmosphere or water.
@McCrankyface black body radiation works relatively well.
@jerry lunar-thermal makes a lot more sense that radiating in a vacuum! Surely worth all the fuel! Think of the water we'll save!
@jerry Bitcoin AI in Space LLM
@jerry how about: Elon Musk, but on Mars.
@siguza that works for me. He can take Grok with him.
@jerry
For All Mankind, but instead US/RU it's just all the AI providers
@jerry can we make Elon sleep on the floor there?
@jerry AI datacenter suppositories!
@jerry I mean... it's less insane than the LEO answer
@jerry
OK, so hear me out. AI techbros, but on the moon. Or Mars. Or even just deep space.
@jerry
Can we put all the AI boosters on a single rocket, flown by Copilot, please? πŸ˜‡
@jerry
Trying to make yet another movie real? 😬
