Current status of the New Year’s Day planted potato experiment. As feared, we barely had a frost last winter. These are Casablanca first earlies and will be either harvested or moved out before the tomatoes and cucumbers are planted in this greenhouse bed in a month or so’s time. #Gardening #GrowYourOwn #HomeGrown
@Broadfork potatoes in spring!

@carolannie Yay! But NOoo! at the same time.

This shouldn’t be anywhere near possible from winter growing in an unheated greenhouse with no fleece covers.

Oh well, just stretching the envelope to see what’s possible in the new ‘normal’ climate.

@Broadfork well, there is that. Observant gardeners will help us, survive climate change
@carolannie Maybe. I do hope so but I am not hopeful. People need to start listening to actual expertise pretty quickly and ignore the growing mountain of AI slop.
@Broadfork Are you south England Broadfork? Don't think that would work for me in the Midlands, I had regular minus temps overnight in the greenhouse. Maybe more sheltered at home in an urban area too?

@laurenheywood I’m in Oxfordshire. We barely had a ground frost all winter. We’ve had lots of overnight temperatures down to low -°C but nothing lower than -5°C.

The greenhouse is sheltered and does benefit from some warmth from the garage wall. I have planted in aug/sept for Christmas/Jan harvest but I’ve never grown potatoes actually planted in Jan before.

I’ll keep my eye out for a dip in temperatures now and look to cover with fleece if that happens but the weather app temp forecast is ok.

@Broadfork this reminds me of that wonderful Aussie who does little experiments, like growing potaters in paper bags: https://youtu.be/SGxSRVlZ-Mg

@ItsePerkele I’ve watched some of his stuff but not for a while. It is difficult to relate to the completely different climate but I do like to see some experimentation.
@Broadfork yeah I dont watch all his videos either, since I'm also in a different climate. But his experiment videos are always fun and interesting
