Crass stupidity from the New York Times.

@calmeilles By their chief diplomatic correspondent for Europe, no less! 🙄🙄
@calmeilles Stupidity, or simply how USA have always seen the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, ie as their own tool and property?

@GuineaPig @calmeilles

I believe with great certainty that this is a way for most USA Americans to see themselves. They do not bother with small things like facts.

But the North Alantic Treety Orginazation would very well - could exist without the USA, with a backbone of Canada and European countries.

However, when the US leaves, we must be ready.

@calmeilles If the Times had any reporters with a clue they are all long gone now.

@Alison All it should have taken is that passing by some human with a smattering of common general knowledge.

Apparently there are none of those left with the Gray Lady either.

@calmeilles
Maybe some AI conflation of NATO and NAFTA?
@calmeilles Ouch. I thought it might be kind of provocative but no, seems to be a mistake. In many cases, it’s not authors who type headlines into Content Management Systems, though, but editors. Adjustments might be made if the number of columns etc gets changed. The actual article is very pro-European so I bet Steve Erlanger is pretty dismayed. Surprised there’s no correction yet at the bottom where the print article is quoted. #GiftLink https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/02/world/europe/trump-nato-iran.html?unlocked_article_code=1.YlA.Iu09.w4YeLLvFjGHK&smid=url-share
Every Trump Threat to Abandon NATO Hollows It Out

Doubts that the United States would come to the aid of NATO allies increase each time, prompting Europeans to consider an alliance without Washington.

@christianschwaegerl

If that was intended as a Gift Link it has either expired already or wasn't ever functional.

@calmeilles Apologies. Corrected. Does it work now?

@christianschwaegerl

Yep, like a beut. Thanks. 😀
