I am conflicted. I read #projecthailmary when it came out and found it kind of dumb. I’ve since learned problematic things about Andy Weir that made me even less excited about the film. But we already had tickets for a rare full-family movie date thing. Sigh.

It was a goddamn delight. Pure Friday night Hollywood eye candy perfectly-tuned to hit all the feels. Dammit.

@c_dan4th Thanks for tooting about the movie Project Hail Mary. I was going to pass on seeing it, mistakenly thinking it was another "Alien" horror-type movie. Just read the movie plot line, and it doesn't seem to have that vibe. Am now looking forward to it.
@cfmccarthy Definitely not horror. Rocky (the alien) is entirely endearing in an E.T. crossed with a golden retriever way.
@c_dan4th My partner (scientist) said the same thing but I’m gonna see it anyway. 😁
@fiona The science is extremely dumb in the book and leads to some obvious plot holes. They manage to avoid this in the movie by skipping over a lot (as movie adaptations must), but it works.
@c_dan4th Sometimes asshole people make amazing art, and I think it's pretty ok to feel conflicted about that.
@irilyth @c_dan4th And some asshole people make art that is adaptable into better art by more talented people in a different medium.
@aphowell @irilyth It’s not entirely different people though. Weir is an exec producer or some such on the movie and is definitely benefitting financially. And it’s done by Amazon Studios which has it’s own issues.
@c_dan4th @irilyth That's true. For me, it's more on the Steve Mnuchin end of the spectrum than J. K. Rowling, but I respect a decision to treat Weir's name and the studio as radioactive.
