The NSF has been compromised.
Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request to Congress

NSF - U.S. National Science Foundation
@luckytran This country is going to shit. When will people fight back?

@luckytran Jesus Christ.

I'm an American chemistry professor's daughter. I became a privacy researcher. I left the US 2 decades ago because I was a privacy researcher under the Bush admin and the writing was on the wall.

But this? NSF funding was... prestigious.

I... there are no institutions left, are there.

@luckytran Their punishment when thrown out of office must be immediate and overwhelmingly severe and above all, permanent.
@heafnerj @luckytran I can’t think of anything fitting for the amount of damage that’s been done.
@luckytran When the Nazis come to town, the "silent majority" stay silent.

@luckytran The slide has been so sad to watch. Their director resigned in protest last spring, if memory serves, and they've got a nonscientist interim now. I seem to remember a surprise relocation also, and some terrible alterations to peer review?

I was there for a brief fellowship in 2008/9 and was just so impressed by everything about the place -- the program officers and other staff I met were curious, dedicated, collegial people who wanted to make their fields better.

@luckytran The Administration & Congress don't have a damned idea what the most critical challenges are.
@luckytran took me some time to figure the FY in file name is Fiscal Year... Not Fck You 🫣 which sounds fitting too

@luckytran The NSF 2027 budget request bottom line numbers are awful.

Non-capital-equipment research grants down almost 60% from 2025. Combined discretionary funding down 55%. Overall funding down 43% (after a brand new $900m line item for an Antarctic research vessel).

And this isn't the actual final funding. This is the *ask*.

Carnage.

@luckytran I'm too tired even to post it. Imagine I posted the "this is fine" meme.
@luckytran
When I read "crappo language" (scientific term) at the very beginning of a paper it's usually the end of my reading time with the so-called document.
@luckytran The heritage foundation has been planning this for years.
@luckytran It is still very bewildering to read the term "woke" and anti-woke phrasing in a document like this. But I guess that's the times we're living in now. (Not that I want to sit back and accept that, though.)
