What are everyone's 'must have' MacOS apps? What's the first thing you install with a new setup?
Great suggestions everyone, thanks for sharing. Going to have some fun setting up a MacBook Neo tonight now Apple finally shipped it.

@andyn BetterTouchTool - NileanƩ from MacStories wrote a great article: https://www.macstories.net/tutorials/three-ways-to-use-bettertouchtool-to-enhance-window-management-with-a-trackpad/

I use this everywhere, so a 3-finger swipe quickly jumps between 2 apps you are using in Stage Manager.
I use a 3-finger tap to close browser tabs or images that popup in Ivory or Discord etc

Such a time saver.

Three Ways to Use BetterTouchTool to Enhance Window Management with a Trackpad

BetterTouchTool is an essential tool that can help anyone streamline their workflows, but I think it really shines when it helps me solve some of my everyday frustrations. I mainly use a Magic Trackpad at my desk. It’s a great way to navigate a Mac: smooth scrolling, great haptic feedback, and gestures for multitasking with

@andyn Oops… a MacBook Neo certainly won’t run Baldur’s Gate 3.
@andyn Little Snitch & Arq
@atog cool, thank you, I'll check them out!
@andyn Drafts, 1Password.
@maique @andyn bbedit, alfred, 1Password, DEVONthink, iterm, typinator, little snitch, 1Blocker
@andyn Bear, Halloy, NetNewsWire, Sublime Text, LibreWolf
@brennan ah, nice, thank you.
@andyn 1Password, Synology Drive and Bear
@tekphloyd two votes for Bear is interesting. I never hear people talking about it these days.
@andyn Bear is a lovely notes app. Why Bear? Because I don’t like Apple Notes, and in my opinion, the Obsidian mobile app is terrible. Unfortunately, there is no Bear for Android.
@tekphloyd @andyn another vote for Bear here 🐻
@purplelime @tekphloyd @andyn And another, I use Bear everyday.

@tekphloyd @andyn By all means like what you like, but I’ve found Obsidian mobile to be much improved since the early days, especially in the last year or so. Might be my most improved app period. Maybe give it a look if it’s been awhile.

Or ignore. All good. šŸ™‚

@tekphloyd @andyn I don’t need a notes app but Bear is a phenomenal app.
@Ronnie @tekphloyd @andyn Agree, used to use it, I just don't take enough notes to justify it. If I took notes I'd be using Bear
@pauls @Ronnie @tekphloyd I've moved note taking apps far too many times and lost notes so it's Obsidian all the way now!
@andyn CleanShotX is a must.
@andyn 1Password. iStat Menus. Little Snitch.

@andyn

General question for those listing 1password as a must have first install …

Are you cross platform on a daily basis, using windows as much as any Apple device?

Do you prefer a browser that doesn’t support Apples password apps or passkeys?

@Chancerubbage I use BitWarden for this, so I'm covered on that front :)

@Chancerubbage @andyn For me, 1Password is worth it because it handles passwords and passkeys (like iCloud Passwords) but also secure notes (vehicle VINs and plates, medical lists), attachments (scanned Drivers License and passports), credit card info (outside of Wallet autofill), API tokens, and more. I don’t use it outside of Apple-world so cross-platform is meh.

I am not happy about the price hike this year, but I haven’t found anything close to its utility.

@andyn If you’re gonna use Safari, I’d recommend the Wipr 2 extension by @mipstian. It’s a very set-and-forget app for blocking ads, trackers, cookie notices and other junk on websites.

Tapestry by @Iconfactory is a great way to follow various online sources (RSS, Mastodon, Bluesky, YouTube, Reddit, etc.) in one place.
