@ChrisJagged I noticed the lack of an option for "fine and I mildly prefer not having a romantic subplot"

Though, I don't even think that would be my real answer since my favorite books are technically romance novels (even though I would consider them more fantasy with a romance subplot). I think what matters most for me is whether the romance subplot seems like a natural consequence of other events in the story, in which case I'll probably enjoy it, or if it seems forced, in which case I won't.

@diazona

Yeah, I continue to curse the "4 answers only" for mastodon.social users

Six would cover the nuance for most situations.

@ChrisJagged ooh yeah that's annoying, I didn't realize that limit was still in place on that server.

@ChrisJagged yeah but why 2 options for preferring romance? One of them could have been "no preference". Or instead of "it depends", a more generic "other".
I'd have voted for either one of those because it doesn't depend, it's all the same to me

A story (be it fiction or non-fiction) can be good, or bad, with or without romance involved. I haven't noticed any strong pattern there

@luc Yeah it's a clunky poll, I admit it.
@ChrisJagged hmm, idea: a novel about two people who realize they don't work as a couple, but the author of their story doesn't and keeps trying to force them together with romance novel clichés 😂

@diazona

That could be pretty entertaining!

> I don’t have any gender or sex-related parts (if a construct has those you’re a sexbot in a brothel, not a murderbot) so maybe that’s why I find sex scenes boring. Though I think that even if I did have sex-related parts I would find them boring.

@ChrisJagged Stories that include a romantic subplot just to "tick that box" is immeasurably annoying to me. It stinks of decisions being made for the wrong reasons.

I'm not against romance in stories, but it should feel like it actually belongs there. The relationship should provide some kind of insight or advance the plot or... just literally anything outside of simply being. If all it adds is some sexual tension and unnecessary friction, I don't want it.

@sylphrin @ChrisJagged I’m in agreement with you here. A shoehorned romance subplot which pulls me away from the main story has always annoyed it. I don’t care if you’re going to kiss or not, get me back to the main plot!

I never plot a story with romance between any of the characters. But I find through the writing if characters want to form a relationship which weaves and works with the main plot. TBH, I find platonic relationships much more fun and interesting to write.

@Emmacox @ChrisJagged as a reader, I LOVE platonic relationships!! I wish there were more of them
@sylphrin @ChrisJagged I do too. My current WIP would work with a romantic relationship but I feel a platonic would be more rewarding to write.
@sylphrin Agreed. I've become so bored with the forced romances in stories that seem more like corporate decisions than anything. But a large group of fans still seem to go rabid for them
