I don't understand the people who told me I would get more conservative with age. The more powerful I become, the more angry I get at the people who abuse their power and the more aware I become of the ways in which systemic oppression functions.

@CosmicTraveler @evacide I got more progressive.

Meanwhile it's on the individual, as I know plenty of people from my HS that went conservative.

@CosmicTraveler @evacide

Me in my teens: "Sure the nordic model of social democracy is the endgame of civilization!"

Me in my 40s: "NO GODS NO MASTERS! SEIZE THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION! DESTROY THE SYSTEM AND DANCE ON ITS ASHES"

@xarvh @CosmicTraveler @evacide When I was little and thought I was a Republican, people told me, "You'll get more conservative as you get older." Now I'm almost 50 and I'm calling for the freaking guillotines. I'm ready to revolution this mofo.
@CosmicTraveler @evacide did you say fully automated spacequeercommunism+

@Wikisteff

Those two lines for '80's and '90's worry me :(

@evanwolf @CosmicTraveler @evacide Sorry, my original thread was on Bluesky or Xitter. I'll scavenge around and see if I can find it.

The Overton Paradox in Three Graphs

Older people are more likely to say they are conservative. And older people believe more conservative things. But if you group people by decade of birth, most groups get more liberal as they get ol…

The Overton Paradox | Brilliant

@evanwolf @CosmicTraveler @evacide @allendowney The data are from the US General Social Survey, https://gss.norc.org/
GSS General Social Survey | NORC

Since 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) has provided politicians, policymakers, and scholars with a clear and unbiased perspective on what Americans think and feel about such issues as national spending priorities, crime and punishment, etc.

@evanwolf @CosmicTraveler @evacide @allendowney Punch line being, "This experience might explain the Overton Paradox: if people perceive that their views have become right of center, they are more likely to identify as conservative."
@CosmicTraveler @evacide i'm a charter member of the boomer class & i never got more conservative. well, ok, i won't hitchhike now. and i don't wear short shorts anymore. does that make me more conservative?
@CosmicTraveler I'm a boomer and I became much more liberal as I aged. I have kids. That requires wanting what's best for them. If Boomers become more conservative, they're doing it wrong.
@CosmicTraveler @evacide me in my seventies:
We’re all fucked.
Kill all the billionaires.

Now imagine what happens when you're over 65 😊

@CosmicTraveler do you have a link to this so I can share it in my discord? My instance is only showing captions, not images, today. Thx

@CosmicTraveler @evacide

Accurate.

At 20 I was a "centrist."

Now I am an overtly queer, worker collective building union activist.

@CosmicTraveler
Those Boomers were projecting, and trying to justify their own slide into complacency by convincing you (and thus themselves) that it was inevitable.

@evacide

@CosmicTraveler @evacide I'm 59. I marched against Reagan, Nukes, and the Wall and for Nelson Mandala. I'm no less progressive now. Maybe more.
@CosmicTraveler @evacide I think what they really mean is "once you're rich and entrenched in the system like me you'll become a conservative" - and statistically, yeah, they're right... but at this point, nobody in their 30s or early 40s is ever gonna get that, so....

@CosmicTraveler @evacide

To be charitable, they probably were thinking that you'd become better informed. This is likely true.

@CosmicTraveler @evacide I have become more liberal with every passing year. I have been environmentalist since my late teens, Democrat since I was about 35. Now more than double that age.

@CosmicTraveler
So, they were right, just a bit more conservative then?

@evacide

@CosmicTraveler @evacide I'm in my 60's, part of the Jones subset< eyeroll> .
I am far less conservative then I was in my 20's and 30's.
@CosmicTraveler @evacide i’m increasingly arriving at the conclusion that political allegiances as one becomes older is predicated more on common sense and a sense of justice than actual conservatism. The Overton window has moved so far to the right that that now manifests itself as a move to the left in older people.
In the past perhaps conservatism was seen as fair and just but those days are long past as it has moved to the right.
Now justice is on the left.

@CosmicTraveler @evacide

I've heard it said that this illusion comes from the fact that Black people are less conservative than white people, but because of racism, Black people die younger, and so if you look at charts of conservativeness by age, you'll see the average conservativeness increase with age. But it's not because of people becoming more conservative. The conservative old people were conservative when they were young. The liberal people just didn't make it to that age.

@CosmicTraveler That’s me in my late 50s.
@CosmicTraveler @evacide I'm always fascinated by the "boomers turned conservative" assumptions b/c my boomer friends & I were all hippies & most of us never stopped. Everywhere I lived I found my way to the hippies... And I see lots out protesting now ...
@BluegrassRoots @CosmicTraveler @evacide Same here, I'm 63 by now, so age-wise I'm a boomer. All my friends who are at roughly the same age, we all were in the streets protesting against shit since the mid 70s, and never stopped ever since.

@CosmicTraveler I like to think, that's me in my 60s, however my knees are not quite as good as they were in my 40s.

Also, I hesitated before boosting because I don't like the taste of beer. What's wrong with me?

Yes fellow citizen The Flight Attendant.

I'm really old, and even more compassionate than in my youth.

As horror convinced me of it.
