40 years driving and had a first the other day. Cruising down a street in my neighbourhood and in the distance I spot a car coming my way. Usually not a drama but this car appeared to be on my side of the road. I slowed down, thinking the car would veer to the other side but it didn't. Then panic sets in, I slow to a crawl, flash my lights and blast the horn. About 3 seconds from impact, the driver realises their error and moves across and then just continues on.

On this day 25 years ago I arrived in the UK with enough money to last (almost) two weeks, no credit cards, no return ticket, nowhere to stay, and no job waiting for me.

We drown people of colour for less, even if we just bombed their country of origin, but I was white*, so I was alright.

I think about this sometimes.

Scrolling the Fediverse this morning brings back such warm memories of a year ago when I had so much free time. Next week, I'll get my first work break in a year and I'm going to spend some time with my oldest friend who has retired. I know he'll try to talk me into joining his new lifestyle and I'm so tired now, that this will look so attractive but I'm now part of a number of work communities and I know that if I give that up, it won't come back. Not at my age now. Big life choices never cease
