Slowly getting started trying to host my own instance/domain, but I have no idea where I am starting.. looking at this tutorial but idk if I can host an instance with WAFRN through this method too? Anyone have info? https://liveapi.com/blog/how-to-build-home-server/

@heckhound bark!!

We were gonna help you with that, right? Can totally do that if you want!

@IceWolf

If you’d like to, sure thing! :) we wanna make sure we have a domain/instance we can run WAFRN through. First step is a server or domain. I was thinking of just using my laptop for now, but I also have an old Macbook pro

@heckhound yeah!!

old macbook pro might work if you can install linux on it

your laptop would also work _if_ you're not shutting it and moving it around, hehe

@IceWolf

I would love to install linux on my old Macbook! Only problem I have rn is I can’t find my charger for it :/ so I may figure out a new cable. For now, maybe I can just use my pc laptop? I do tend to shut it and move it, but I can always leave it up and running for now.
Is it possible to move my server stuff from one laptop to another? Is it worth waiting to get a charger for my Macbook? I’m just excited and want to start this ASAP :> hehe

@heckhound poople! yep you totally can move stuff later! =^.^= especially if you're running wafrn in a container like we're doing masto

you're already on Linux right? what kind of Linux?

@IceWolf

Okay gotcha!
Sooo we are just still learning basics, last night our sister helped us set up a VM on the pc laptop with Debian (64bit I believe) and messed around with that a little bit. Idk if Debian is the best for this project, but I’m open to whatever.

@heckhound Sweet! Debian is 100% what I would suggest so you're golden :3
@heckhound What's your home internet situation like? Do you have a static IP (or at the very least a dynamically changing but still routable one) and access to the router so you can forward ports? It's okay if not; you'll just need to rent a VPS or something.
@heckhound (if you have access to the router but no idea what your public IP situation is like, you can forward ports and then we can try to connect to you)

@heckhound though honestly with a VM involved, getting inbound network connections to go to the VM might be a hassle anyway. Doable, just painful.

(as opposed to the bounce VPS route where you don't have to worry about that because you've got wireguard straight from the VM)

@IceWolf

Hmm after some info and suggestions from other users, I’ll probably want to go the cloud VPS route + domain. I was warned against using my own home IP/internet :s

@heckhound Yeah, sounds like a good idea

You can (and maybe should) use your own laptop to host the server of course. The VPS'll just be a bounce point!
