"The Telegraph is inciting hatred of disabled kids, again. The right-wing shit rag published a piece suggesting parents are forcing ADHD diagnoses for benefits. Coincidentally, this comes just as the Department of Health and Social Care has published an interim report into their review on whether the condition is overdiagnosed."

Right-wing media fuel ADHD hate, Labour promote "overdiagnosis" propaganda

Labour wants you to believe ADHD and other conditions are overdiagnosed to engineer consent for when they strip vulnerable people of benefits

@PatternChaser similar to the Reagan administration decrying “welfare queens” picking up welfare checks in their cadillacs. Bill Clinton ended up cutting welfare. Reagan completely defunded long term mental health facilities, resulting in all the homeless people on city streets in the US.
@MatthewChat Thankfully, I live in a *slightly* more civilised country (UK) than the uncaring USA, but things are not hugely better here either. The statistics show that many more prisoners have 'mental health' issues than the average 'man in the street', perhaps indicating that these people are being imprisoned instead of given the help they need (and deserve?). 😢 😡

@PatternChaser what does the term “overdiagnosis” even *mean*?

Like. Nobody seems to be claiming misdiagnosis, i.e. that diagnoses are incorrect.

If it’s “more than the system can handle” doesn’t that just show us that the system was never built for reality?

Diagnosis is just an observation of reality. This bone is broken, that skin is bruised, that lung is punctured, this person is unresponsive.

Maybe you want less people to have broken legs, but not counting them doesn’t change how many there are

@loops When people say "over-diagnosis", they refer to what they see and understand as fraud — a cheating diagnosis to obtain "benefits". This, even though such benefits rarely exist! People don't like to see other people given a helping hand; it makes them feel angry that their own taxes are 'misused' in this way... 😢

Humans are horrible people. 🤷
