“If Artemis II is successful, the astronauts will be the first humans to reach the moon’s orbit in more than 50 years, and their path around its far side will take them farther into the universe than any human being has previously traveled.” https://www.theatlantic.com/science/2026/04/artemis-moon-launch-trump/686661/?gift=j9r7avb6p-KY8zdjhsiSZ0fNOSfoCs5Ae2CU41BTIqk
Why Doesn’t Anybody Realize We’re Going Back to the Moon?

On the ground at the Trump era’s most important space launch

The Atlantic
@kottke
Because all the American newspapers and TV stations would rather quote every word of a narcissistic dumbass President than tell us about how amazing humans can be when they work together on something really difficult
@GofLeisure @kottke Yup, we've all been a little too distracted by the swiftly crumbling clown show we are living in right now.

@kottke Why you ask? Because after 50 years other countries like China and India are now pursuing space exploration and the USA simply dropped the ball. They're now seeing everyone stepping up.
China is now building their own microchips, building their own satellite network, building their own space station and possibly go to the moon and Mars also. Nobody needs the USA anymore for this.

This is the desperate attempt of the USA to still sound important. And nobody cares.

@kottke They're not even going to land?! What's the point?
@kottke I stopped reading at the gratuitous reference to "the Trump era."
@kottke We realise. We don't care.
@kottke I'm terrified they won't make it back safely thanks to politically motivated staff and funding cuts and a push to look good globally for the administration....
