I could perhaps have chosen a smarter place for the glue-up to take place than on the desk in front of the computer I was using, but I hadn't given *any* thought to the order of operations when assembling this thing, so I'm pleased with how it's turning out so far
MegSo this is my Edge Of Map box. The edge of map block is a funny artefact in Commander Keen 4 (and a couple others) which was used to line parts of some maps - it's occasionally visible through trivial glitches or cheats, and most people who've thought about the game in the last couple of year will probably go "hey, it's that thing!".
I 3D printed one for my desk, mostly for shits and giggles but also as somewhere to put a cup so my idiot fluffy cat can't knock it over. 🧵 #retrogaming

I've finally gotten around to actually doing something with it, and @ClarusPlusPlus posted something about the Edge Of Map block a little while ago - that, plus noticing it's made of four colours (neatly matching the number of filaments my printer can switch between), planted the seed of an idea in my mind.
I did not start with a coherent design in mind - I just made a square with chamfered edges that would theoretically make up a cube, cut a slot in the bottom edge of it so I could add a flat base, and printed them over a couple of days - at 12x12cm, each face takes about 1h30 to print, including some filament changes.
The cube could be printed in place in one solid piece, but that would mean hours of time spent just swapping filaments almost every layer, which is a bit wasteful.
It was a bit of a pain to assemble and glue, because nothing holds together naturally - I had to clamp it very gently while the superglue cured.
A version 2 will be smaller (it's a bit of an unwieldy size on a desk) and bolt together more securely (as v1 is a bit fragile). The chamfering will stay and the bottom redesigned so multiples of these can stack.
This is my kind of April Fools nonsense - it's harmless, funny, and entertaining to those in the know. 🏁

bricks@timixretroplays You could try to use a 0.2 mm nozzle, make the text flush with the surface, and print the lettered pieces face down on the print bed to increase their surface quality. Depending on the filament and color translucency, giving the text object a penetration of 0.6 to 0.8 mm should be sufficient to achieve a good opacity. The text will be very crisp, printed like this, and in my experience, the pixels should look even better.
Clarissa | making Enigma Heart@timixretroplays The Edge Of Map tile is easily one of my favorite quirky little things in all of gaming history. It's so fun when you accidentally see it in-game, and it's so blunt about what it is, lol. I couldn't help but use it in my own game for the same purpose!
