I did not at all learn my lesson and now there's superglue on my mousepad, but at least the hard work on this project is done.
A v2 will have much more thought put into the assembly and glue-up. And probably also be stackable for maximum giggles.
So this is my Edge Of Map box. The edge of map block is a funny artefact in Commander Keen 4 (and a couple others) which was used to line parts of some maps - it's occasionally visible through trivial glitches or cheats, and most people who've thought about the game in the last couple of year will probably go "hey, it's that thing!".
I 3D printed one for my desk, mostly for shits and giggles but also as somewhere to put a cup so my idiot fluffy cat can't knock it over. ๐งต #retrogaming
Over the last few years, I've been collecting #3DPrinting filaments with colours that match the original 16 colour IBM palette - you can see the results of that here: https://digipres.club/@timixretroplays/112415415235497733
I've finally gotten around to actually doing something with it, and @ClarusPlusPlus posted something about the Edge Of Map block a little while ago - that, plus noticing it's made of four colours (neatly matching the number of filaments my printer can switch between), planted the seed of an idea in my mind.
I did not start with a coherent design in mind - I just made a square with chamfered edges that would theoretically make up a cube, cut a slot in the bottom edge of it so I could add a flat base, and printed them over a couple of days - at 12x12cm, each face takes about 1h30 to print, including some filament changes.
The cube could be printed in place in one solid piece, but that would mean hours of time spent just swapping filaments almost every layer, which is a bit wasteful.
It was a bit of a pain to assemble and glue, because nothing holds together naturally - I had to clamp it very gently while the superglue cured.
A version 2 will be smaller (it's a bit of an unwieldy size on a desk) and bolt together more securely (as v1 is a bit fragile). The chamfering will stay and the bottom redesigned so multiples of these can stack.
This is my kind of April Fools nonsense - it's harmless, funny, and entertaining to those in the know. ๐
Anyone Keen on some EOM cubes? ๐

Challenge extended.
@timixretroplays @lurkjay for another 3D printed in-game object, check out my pinned toot ๐ค
(I also uploaded a matching 6" tissue box cover to Thingiverse; it was a thing I made while figuring out how to build the big one.)
