RE: https://mastodon.social/@mattsheffield/116332497422486698

this is digital blackface and racist as fuck.

whomever is doing this knows Black people are THE Culture; so how swell it is to make money off Black culture without Black people?

and don't get me started with the fact that automata are proxies for SLAVES.

don't hesitate to call out Alphabet/Google/Youtube for making money off Black digital slaves.

this isn't progress. this is still baldfaced racism.

@blogdiva the fucking way people use the "ai" for stuff that a decent world would view as despicable minstrelry is horrifying and the lack of guardrails around doing so should be as serious an issue as it telling people to suicide
@blogdiva I'm sick of this shit.

@blogdiva

That sounds like the modern equivalent of those "Easy Music" radio stations playing faked-up "orchestral" instrumental covers of popular hits. I wonder if they screwed the original artists like LLM/AI is doing now.

@blogdiva Sadly the author doesn’t pound this point.

@blogdiva

Yep!

"There is also something disturbingly racist about the thing too. The bot is a caricature of a soul artist. Worse in its way than the white, blackfaced minstrels of the early 1900s."

'A caricature of a soul artist': Pittsburgh musicians react to AI phenom Eddie Dalton

The latest addition to the brave new world is Eddie Dalton, a contemporary soul singer in the classic vein of Otis Redding. Dalton, depicted as a gray-haired...

@blogdiva It's not just racism. It's also machine-made slop. Both need to be fought against across the board.
@maniandthenonos @blogdiva Not trying to be mean, but you people will always say we need to fight against it, but you don't actually acknowledge the original problem because you're so brainwashed just like everyone on the left and right at this point in time (we'll, at every point in time actually, but you know). The actual problem is that definition, "race". It only causes problems in itself and it just claims to be classifying people who are different when it just results in violence.
@maniandthenonos @blogdiva Think of it this way: There's the U.S. and China, correct? These are both very patriotic/nationalist countries. These two will not actually be able to get along due to that. Why? Because of the way they both think. With race, it's kind of the same way. If you continue thinking you're different than someone else, then you're just subconsciously being "patriotic" about being different, it's just subconscious and you don't even realize it's an issue.
@Invector07 @blogdiva Blah blah blah, "you brainwashed" blah blah blah... what do you think this is? Seventh grade? The Boy Scouts of "I am smarter than you"? Who are you to call people who say we should always fight against racism names? Grow up.
@maniandthenonos @blogdiva See, this is exactly what I mean. You're not different than those on the far right who don't listen to anything that is told to them. You both are completely lost causes and I don't see how you think you're any different from each other. Please, just read and think about what was said. It's not that difficult.
@Invector07 @blogdiva I know one thing. I don't need to listen to you, 'Invector07". Go away, clanker. Blocked.

"you people"?

if you don't want me to block you, you better edit that out. am not here for you or anybody to disrespect me like that.

@Invector07 @maniandthenonos

@blogdiva @Invector07 I know, right? "You people"... "You're so brainwhashed"... The guy known as "Invector07" with zero followers comes here to tell "us people" how we should think. The Invector of free thinking. Laughable.
@blogdiva @maniandthenonos I did not say a single thing to offend you. I literally said nothing. You are just trying to be offended at this point. What I said was a little Disorganized because I happen to be quite disorgsnized with my thoughts, but I think it made sense enough for you to know what it meant. I would love to know why you don't like what I said.
@Invector07 don't "you people" me.
@blogdiva Okay, I won't. Yeah, that was rude. Sorry. Now, do you want to discuss? Please be open-minded about this.

@blogdiva @[email protected] @maniandthenonos

Best case scenario “invector” is a racist stooge using AI to produce his slop, if not a bot entirely.

I’ve already blocked it. You are never going to be making a big mistake by blocking any account that shows up selling “racism isn’t a problem.”

@Invector07 @maniandthenonos @blogdiva

Invector may not have been very tactful but I agree with his point that the issue is having internalized the concept of "race" in humanity as opposed to having a spectrum of melanin concentration and many other spectrums of other variables. Race has become a fixed thing that people defend staunchly.
The real divide between Invector and the other group is one of perspective. Invector is idealist and mistaking the end goal with the struggle to get there.

@Invector07 @maniandthenonos @blogdiva

The struggle on a daily basis is real and needs to be acknowledged but you cant lose the ideal in the process otherwise it becomes a vain battle that keeps going in circles.

@blogdiva If it was created by a robot, then the work has less value than if a human created it. I can still enjoy the music, but I don't think that robots should be able to claim ad revenue. That said, this is platforms using ai generated music to keep more of the revenue pool for themselves, or by spammers to take a slice of the pie without putting in the work. It doesn't matter if people actually like the music because robots are the primary audience.
@blogdiva *soul* music, of all things! 🤦

@blogdiva

This is like the YouTube trend of AI generated black female crafts people it’s just AI slop to sell goods manufactured and Asian sweat shops as handicrafts you know by people who can’t tell that something has been mass produced

@blogdiva I can’t hate this enough. This is what I reserve the word hate for truly. Like a perversion of everything these artist ever did. Soulless!

@blogdiva

"...raising the question of where people think beauty and art lives..."

Beauty and art live in people.

There is no art and beauty in stochastic errorist machines.

Unless it's all the stolen art and beauty that was funnelled into their grinders to make slop.

Soul music? Stole music.

@blogdiva imo no one is listening to this. it's bots, all the way down.
@blogdiva as sad as it might sound, AI generated music is just one area of our splendid AI driven artificial future.
@blogdiva It's the worst thing to happen to Black music since the cover records of the 1950s.
@blogdiva Also remember that a lot of the work that is presented to us as AI is extremely dependent on low-wage hard labour by Africans. The most reports I've seen have been about Kenya, but there are probably other countries high on the list as well.

@blogdiva
JFC 😑
We're incinerating the future of the planet just to generate racism... A thing humanity has never been short of.

That's enough internet for me this evening.

@blogdiva Yeah I was like, "What're the odds the people behind this _aren't_ white?" and I figure it's _not high_.
@moira @blogdiva Skin pigmentations have nothing to do with greed.

@kingmoth @blogdiva You have _absolutely no fucking idea what you are talking about_, and _absolutely no fucking clue about the history of the music industry in the US_, and the way I know that, for 100% sure, for absolute certain, as someone who has _been in that business as an artist_, is that you said what you just said.

The best thing you could possibly do for yourself is delete that before Liza sees it, walk away, and go do some reading about the history of the music industry in the US.

Because holy shit. Read up some and hopefully you'll come to understand how completely detached from historical reality your statement is.

@blogdiva I think it is also authoritarianism.

The unit of action in that state of mind is ”joy of obedience”, or something. Which is implicit in racism always.

Fpr the authoritarian, the natural order of things is that something ”with more power”, like an AI model, should joyously be celebrated as a good thing, and we should submit because of that power.

It’s a simple mindset, yet it guides so many because evolution preferred survival over justice, so scared people are more.

@blogdiva

Fuck**g clankers!🤬
Well actually no! Fuck whoever came with this and made "AI" copy that music.🤬

I hate "AI" in anything and this is "utterly disgusting" and "insult to life" as Hayao Miyazaki once said.

Also - whoever copied Ghibli style should burn in hell for eternity...with everyone who destroys beauty of this world using that shit.

@blogdiva

This stuff isn’t “taking over Spotify” etc. because people are seeking it out, it is being algorithmically shoved in their ears by these sleazy corporations.

They 100% control the algorithm, it’s trivial to favor their generated garbage over actual music from an actual artist.

@blogdiva fuck AI. UGH. This is the worst and people just dive in to see it.

I just can’t help but wonder when are we collectively going to realize that this is not good for us. I keep watching the ahit usage being made. The jobs lost. The perpetration of just straight bad ideas or disinformation, name it.

And people keep flocking to it

@blogdiva this is so depressing. Soul music with no soul. Services like Spotify obviously don't care because they make money https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-Ideas/Mark-Disable-AI-Generated-Songs/idc-p/7382376#M347595

I thought the promise of AI / LLMs was to take away the drudgery and let people make art and enjoy leisure.

Cc @mekkaokereke as this feels like the sort of crap he's been warning us about for a long time
