There is the whole business of paragraph length, which affects flow.

Personally, I take it further and use white space for speciall effect. Indent poetry. Variable indent or even random spacing, example below:

Blood pulsed in my ears
     Heart pounded
         Crashing
             into the soldier’s
                 white hats

“Bijou, fly!” Her order cracked through the air.

I closed my eyes, spreading my arms.

          Be a raven
                    Swooping for food.
                              On the porch

I don't do anything with typography except for the use of foreign alphabets.
