I've mentioned to multiple customers that we're sending four people to the moon in a few minutes and absolutely nobody has had any idea this was even in the works
This is 10000% me

@hannah
I was in DC during autumn 2008, and one of the presidential debates was going to be on tv that night. So I went down to the hotel bar hoping to catch the action and, you know, _be there_ amidst the fevered reactions from the locals.

They had football on. And nobody cared.

I watched it in my room.

@hannah I turned on the TV in the early morning by chance and saw the aborted launch or w/e a few years ago so I knew it was a thing but like... maybe I would've gotten excited when I was a kid, but like... I'm just too nihilistic at this point... what with how society is and all...
@hannah if you are phrasing it like that do they perhaps think you mean your store is doing it.
@PsyChuan well we did take $600M to develop a crochet hook that would work in zero gravity

@hannah i hear the Russians used a pencil.

i didn't even know you could crochet with a pencil.

@hannah Yeah it has gotten surprisingly little news coverage.

But maybe that's because of everything else that's happening.

@klara i mean, there was a lot going on in 1968 too!

@hannah

I've paid zero attention cuz I thought it had to do with mean mr musk

@hannah Wait, we have a moon?
@hannah I would have missed the launch if it hadn't popped up in my fedi feed...
@hannah I've noticed this too, there has been a lot going on but this feels like this went from 'NASA wants to do this' to 'we're speed running this thing' somewhere a little over a year ago, or there abouts? Maybe less?
@hannah the first i heard of it was minutes before the launch! i'm glad i got to see it, i'm glad it wasn't an april fools joke, and i'm also glad it seems to have not been via a billionaire's vanity project rocket either XD
@hannah I only heard about it last minute yeah
@hannah I had no idea it was happening until it happened, and I also don't understand why people are so excited about it? It's replicating something people did over 60 years ago, it's being done because a fascist wanted a propaganda tool to stir up US nationalism with a crewed mission. This is the same fascist who cut funding to NASA, dramatically undermining its ability to perform less exciting, but more meaningful unmanned missions that can uncover genuine new knowledge and understanding...

@hannah
yeah it's kinda absurd that i only heard "oh they're doing a moon mission soon" "wait what do you mean it's already launched"

for some reason noone shares the date or time for anything anymore.

@hannah I saw the news for this yesterday and I thought it was an April 1 prank!!

@hannah
Yeah, the current regime has lost the plot on space exploration.

That last Mars mission had it right, tonnes of outreach, and they slapped a camera on every square cm of rover that wasn't already doing a science, and they turned that firehose on the public.

This bunch, even I only heard about because they're going up in a spaceship that has failed 50% of its live fire tests and I follow people who like technical crash reports.
