A federal judge just ruled that #Trump can face civil liability for inciting violence in the #Jan6 #insurrection. His incendiary speeches that day were "unofficial" acts not covered by presidential immunity.

See the decision by Amit Mehta of the DC district court.

@petersuber I'm sure the Roberts Court will have lots of well-considered opinions as to why that's wrong and he should be protected for the Good of the Nation.

@vivtek @petersuber

Yeah, I'm pessimistic this will survive appeal, but I'm glad to see the district courts doing what they can to maintain the rule of law.

@petersuber Yum, Class action, with at least one half of the country as Plaintiffs

@petersuber

I'd love to see Mehta replace one of the corrupt Republican politicians currently on the Supreme Court

@petersuber

On one hand, that's good news. On the other, it infuriates me that it took over 5 years for our system to get here.

If that's not broken, what is?

@Wintergr33n @petersuber Trump's favorite method of breaking law and order is to delay everything as much as is physically possible. In fact, if he hadn't managed to succeed in doing that, he would have been running for the "presidency" (dictatorcy?) from prison...

A lot of loyalist judges have helped him every step that they could. But there are still some judges he doesn't yet own.

You're right though, it's a major whopping flaw in the system that willful delays can break things.

@petersuber Now would be a great time for our US House Dems to stand on their desks in Congress and demand Trump's immediate impeachment

@petersuber And Trump is only immune to federal law. He can't pardon himself for civil suits.

@petersuber

The shameful part is, it took 5 years to decide he should face consequences for this.
