In other bin-related news, I recently discovered that the first person on the block to put the bin out, letting everyone else know what the right colour is, is called a "binfluencer" or if very old, a "harbinger".
@LaChasseuse Bin there dun that 😜

@LaChasseuse that "binfluencer" effect becomes really apparent when someone puts out their trash on the wrong day:

Where I live, waste paper is put on the street in bundles and collected once a month. Just last month someone in my street put out their paper bundles a week to early. A few hour later there were a few more bundles. On the next morning almost half the houses in the street had at least one bundle of paper out.

To make matters worse, it was raining quite heavily that day...

@s3lph EEK what a nightmare!

@LaChasseuse πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Does it also do brown bins? We have green, blue, pink and brown. I can never remember which goes out when.

@NormanDunbar Maybe if it lights up all the LEDs at the same time it will be brown? πŸ˜‚
@LaChasseuse @NormanDunbar 50% red, 25% green should do it!
@LaChasseuse these techbros will not rest until they have put us all out of jobs
@LaChasseuse Seems to me a total waste of resources and energy. What we need, is for the council to do what it used to - give us a physical leaflet we can stick on the fridge or somewhere that gives the whole calendar.alternatively, you can, I dunno write it out yourself?
@UkeleleEric But where's the fun in that, Eric?
@LaChasseuse @UkeleleEric Because we can. And if we can, we do.

@Zimme83 And sometimes just for fun.

@UkeleleEric

@UkeleleEric @LaChasseuse ah, you want @alex's script to generate a personalised (well, maybe street-ised is a closer term?) bin day calendar

https://alexwlchan.net/2026/bin-calendar/?ref=mastodon

(though I did write about a mate's project where he made his *actual* recycling bin/crate light up the evening before it would be collected, in my book on IoT 😁)

Creating a personalised bin calendar

Every year I use Python and a bit of CSS to create a fridge calendar that tells me about bin day.

@amcewen Is this not standard nowadays?
I can download a personalised bin calendar from our municipal waste management company.

They also have an app with all the relevant dates, which can remind you.

But I would love to have the bins, that light up.

@UkeleleEric @LaChasseuse @alex

@UkeleleEric @LaChasseuse

We are both lucky that we can read and write - that's why we probably also don't need an app to tell us when to "rehydrate" (vulgo: drink) and don't rely on emojis to express ourselves.

KISS

No insult intended, just my 2 Cents.

@Drums_in_the_night Hmmm. Do we maybe need an app to know when something is just humour?

@UkeleleEric

@LaChasseuse @UkeleleEric

Well, I'm German… (\U+1F9D0)

@Drums_in_the_night That's the "wΓΌrst" excuse I've ever heard! πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚

@UkeleleEric

@UkeleleEric @LaChasseuse our local council publishes the bin dates as a downloadable calendar in .ics format or something.

If you’ve got a calendar app on your phone, just import it - and never miss a bin day again.

@LaChasseuse going to need more leds in there
@jfparis
Blue - blue LED
Green - blue + yellow LED
Black - ?? flashing LED perhaps?
There are only 3 different bins where I live.

@LaChasseuse so far :)

We have 5 here but the schedule is relatively simple with weekly collection for all of them bar the garden bin (fortnightly)

@jfparis Ours is as complicated as a Fox Trot or perhaps a Tango!

Want some Whiskey to go with your Tango Foxtrot?

@LaChasseuse @jfparis

@praxiscode I may need that, yes πŸ˜‚
@jfparis
@praxiscode
Niche joke territory.
I like that
@LaChasseuse
@LaChasseuse It's not the same thing every week? XD
@LaChasseuse Needs to check the Met Office website and tip itself over with a little servo if it's windy...

🫠 love it, super Idee!
@LaChasseuse Cool! I would like to have something like that, too. But I think we only get this data in PDF format, so not exactly machine readable…
@erinaceus @LaChasseuse Converting PDF to machine readable format is one of the few things AI is really good at
@davidbcohen @erinaceus @LaChasseuse it doesn't even need to be AI. OCR technology is 20+ years old...

@mwt @davidbcohen @LaChasseuse It's PDF, so the text is somewhere in there in digital form. It would just be very annoying to get it out. And if they change the layout, I would have to redo the script. So I'd rather add the 26 dates per year for the yellow bin (which is the only one that I personally have to care about) manually.

Until my town gets an API for these dates.

@mwt @erinaceus @LaChasseuse Yes, but AI will rearrange the text and generate a generate a file in the format you want, without hand cranking it.
@davidbcohen @mwt @LaChasseuse Turns out they _do_provide the dates as CSV… I just had to look a bit longer. Not really an API, but good enough.
@LaChasseuse this tech will come for us all once way or another
RIP Michael, thinking of you every Tuesday

@LaChasseuse

@revk @neil

Genius idea! πŸ˜„πŸ‘

@LaChasseuse i need this on my desk now‼️(kyd ref)
@LaChasseuse alas my local council website reports such information in a particularly obtuse manner, so my attempts at similar have thus far resulted in frustration :/
@LaChasseuse how do I get it to tell me when to put out the brown bin?
@educoder It will need a small speaker, so it can go "moooooo"
@LaChasseuse Wait, your council has good information? All I know is "Is it Wednesday, put stuff out..." Not even so much as something I can actually like do calculations... Smart councils are worth it...
@LaChasseuse I like it. And given that I forgot to put the bins out last night, perhaps it's time I made one!
