iOS 18 holdouts: 18.7.7 is out now for devices that were eligible for the 26 upgrade. You should upgrade immediately. The security updates are significant. https://www.macrumors.com/2026/04/01/apple-ios-18-darksword-security-update/
Apple Issues Rare iOS 18 Security Update to Protect Against DarkSword Exploit

Apple today released a new build of iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7, presumably with a fix for the DarkSword exploit. Apple told Wired that it would...

@misty UGH i gave in 3 days ago after the malware started showing up in ad networks
@cancel Honestly I think it’s on Apple they waited this long. :/
@misty absolutely, but i feel stupid holding out for almost 6 months and then giving in 3 days too soon
@cancel Yeah… that’s fair. :/ I was in the verge of giving in too
@misty it's absolutely a downgrade, even 26.4. on an iphone 16 pro max the battery drains noticeably faster doing nothing at all. (this is accounting for the initial flurry of useless background activity it does after a major upgrade.)
@misty that's on top of somehow having even worse usability than flat design. it's pretty much flat design but with unreadable shaders applied to all of the UI shapes. preaching to the choir here i know
@cancel @misty Likewise, I replaced the battery in my iPhone 11 recently and “upgrading” to iOS 26 basically undid the gain.
@cancel I've heard a *lot* of performance and battery life complaints. It seems like a real mess.

@misty they also removed a bunch of battery tracking and introspection features to make it harder to visualize lol

you can no longer see breakdowns by system services, apps, etc. over time periods, there's now only hour granularity for the bars in general (and you can't see the apps) and it hides a bunch of system services.

@cancel @misty pls excuse
for it is late
and I am tired

what ... has you exposed you to Such Malware Networks ... in such rapid time (...to give up 3 Days Ago)?

(also, give up on ..... what?)

@froztbyte @cancel There's a set of exploits called "DarkSword”, and the exploit kit leaked so it's become a lot easier for people to exploit it. I've heard rumours that malicious ads using the exploit may have made their way into ad networks since that leaked so just visiting websites can compromise your phone, etc.

@misty @cancel oh I'm _quite_ aware

I was complaining at apple support (through the _extremely_ anemic support avenues we have in ZA) hours into it

so, uh. the other bits

instead of the toot that you made.

@misty also note that Apple have dark-patterned this update below the fold that doesn't appear to be there
@fasterandworse @misty I was just telling a coworker about this. Definitely looks like a fishy pattern. 👀

@misty @fasterandworse yes, had to find it there. But good!

No more Lockdown Mode needed after the update, yea?

@misty Oh man, thanks for the warning, I'm still on an iphone 10
@farawaythyer No problem! Yeah, this exploit is pretty scary and apparently it's being actively exploited via ad networks, so highly recommend upgrading now if you can
@farawaythyer I'd held out partly for performance reasons on my older phone, partly because I don't like the new design in iOS 26
@misty haha fuck me, I just upped this ipad to 26. Thanks, Apple.
@misty Gah! I upgraded my iPad (9th Gen, from 2021) last week, and - aside from how much I dislike the UI - it's just incredibly slow now under iOS 26. I've never downgraded an Apple device before, but this weekend I'm going to give it a try...
If you’ve turned on iOS 18 beta updates to avoid getting nagged about iOS 26, this update won’t show up. I had to turn off beta updates for it to show up.
@misty I am so glad I never updated to that slop iOS 26. This doesn't redeem Apple by any means, just glad I can get security updates finally after years of waiting.
@misty @mhoye Thank you for spreading this news - I would have missed it (due to being hidden behing the relentless pushing of 26)
