the net effect is that the story doesn't fully converge into one forward moving narrative until volume 13 (of a total of 16)... and then the second chapter of the volume is another flashback for a new POV and then third chapter is ALSO another flashback for a new pov and now john is screaming

I love the effect of a good VN tragic flashback but at some point I start to miss stories that start at the beginning don't jump around constantly

this is lightly a spoiler but spider isekai is told non-linearly, where there's two main threads at the start that are separated by a gap of several years. it's mostly easy to follow because the threads are mostly linear on their own, and they nearly converge at the end of volume 10... but then there's a 2 book flashback that goes all the way back to another character's childhood and then tells his life story
@farawaythyer haha wow, I was very confused by this so I played Passage again, I had no idea the game has a Y axis. I thought you just hold right until the game ends. No wonder I didn't get it
the first two games are just structured like pokemon, you have big long routes to walk between towns and a handful of scary towers and caves for dungeons, it's very natural. crossbell takes place mainly in one big city, so they add a massive slightly-inexplicable underground techno-sewer so you can dungeon crawl periodically. I don't know what cold steel's solution is, I know those games are more persona-y

"the treasure maze is very important to the story"
apparently the newest trails games struggle so much to integrate the visual novel and dungeon crawling that there's a whole "VR world" you jump into periodically so you can fight some damn battles
I just think it would be very funny to get into a long trashy western litrpg series
