There was awful news in Dublin city centre this afternoon, as a young man was killed while cycling near O'Connell Street. Road violence in this country is simultaneously out of control and horrendously minimised.

The collision happened at the corner of Abbey Street and O’Connell Street on the north side of the city shortly before 1pm this afternoon.

@clickhere I passed by later with my eldest. Got home and we heard the worst news confirmed, my youngest then said, "why do we accept road deaths like they are a normal thing? If they were the result of anything else there'd be an outcry"

Indeed.

@ronanmcd They're absolutely right, unfortunately - never a truer word spoken.

Yet, policy makers will carry on with the current plans to make helmets and high vid mandatory for cycling - things that would have had absolutely no protective effect against a massive cement truck.

The only reason why I wear a helmet these days is to cut off that line of victim blaming if the time ever comes.

@clickhere Even how they are reported is appalling. It minimises the driver of the vehicle every time-as if there were no operator, and always mentions the humanity of the victim. There is no equivalence between a cyclist or pedestrian and any vehicle weighing the better part of a tonne, often much more.
@clickhere I'd like to know what happened so that action can be taken not ignored three years after the event. The location would indicate a left turning lorry driver hitting the cyclist.
