copilot is just for entertainment? Per the TOS...
Highlighting is my own. From that last boost.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-copilot/for-individuals/termsofuse

@invadersil Plenty of Microsoft's other software may not work as intended, so I don't see this as a big change.
@Steve true. maybe they put this in all their TOSs?
Also putting it in the category of toy/entertainment cascades to everything else it touches as entertainment.

@invadersil @Steve i feel like this has no legal basis

when your advertisement clearly says x the customer can expect x to the full extend of the law
here in germany it's like that and I assume elsewhere also

@invadersil lots of things are labeled "for entertainment use only" or "for novelty use only."
@djfiander @invadersil Yes, but people aren't using those other things to write important documents or perform important calculations.
@hydropsyche @djfiander @invadersil our entire charity has made it the official AI agent.
Very much not being treated as entertainment (I mean I fully ignore it but don't think I'm in the majority)

@noodlemaz Third level education institution here (and I'm in the data protection/GDPR dept 😭).

@hydropsyche @djfiander @invadersil

@djfiander @invadersil

Yes, but usually those things aren't part of an enterprise business suite of products.

This is the equivalent of saying, "Excel is for entertainment purposes only."

@ErikSTL @invadersil Well, we SHOULD be treating it as if it's for entertainment only. Because it has a history of getting important things wrong when deployed as part of an "enterprise business suite."
@ErikSTL @djfiander @invadersil This looks like "Copilot for Individuals" according to the URL. I wonder what the ToS is for enterprise.

@kevin @djfiander @invadersil

Probably just says, "You sure you want to use this on your important shit?"

@kevin Good point. I'm not finding the ToS for the Enterprise offering.

@ErikSTL @djfiander @invadersil

@koantig @kevin @ErikSTL @djfiander @invadersil If anyone finds it, can they share in reply to this?

😬🙈

@djfiander For when the billion dollar company I work for (or any company for that matter) mandates using copilot, which is "for novelty use only," how do you feel about the end products?
@invadersil @djfiander
note that this is from the TOS "for individuals". I couldn't find the TOS for the enterprise/business version, no idea if it has a similar clause

@invadersil

Forced entertainment people are required to pay for.

I’m not entertained.

@invadersil @cstross It certainly doesn't help with work. Maybe it entertains Microsoft to be able to charge more for systems with extra spyware?
@invadersil "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?!?" --Satya Nadella (probably)
@invadersil Now I’m considering if it would be possible to have entertainment software on corporate computers explicitlyprohibited, and then have CoPilot banned… 🤔

@invadersil

"entertainment"?

huh...

i give it one out of five stars. i've seen mandatory HR training videos that were more entertaining. i've had DMV visits more entertaining.

@invadersil
As if LLMs didn't resemble scammers pretending to be psychics enough...
@invadersil pay no attention to CoPilot, we have purposely trained it wrong, as a joke
@invadersil It should have said "CoPilot is for *other people's* entertainment."

@invadersil

You know how someone tries to get away with saying some horrible sexist or racist thing by claiming they were just joking?

"For entertainment only" is the equivalent of that. They are neither joking, nor trying to entertain. Microsoft just wants something they can point to, when they get sued.

@BlueDot That may be, for sure. Though when people lose their life or get injured at amusement parks because of poorly maintained equipment, the amusement park is going to feel the pain.
@invadersil JFC why are they cramming it down our throats then???
@invadersil @siguza tried dealing with it today, not sure if entertained but definitely need to listen to more rage against the machine.
@invadersil that's one heck of a "get out of jail" card if I ever seen one...
@invadersil the problem is, it's not even entertaining to see everyone screwing up using it.
@invadersil How do we know what message "that last boost" refers to?

@kauer Well, the post that was immediate just before this post. Which was the last boost prior.

but here it is https://mastodon.social/@HackerNewsBot@m.einverne.info/116324856309664532

@invadersil Thanks. I read your post some seven hours after you posted it. Locating "that last boost" would have meant going to your profile, searching for or scrolling to locate your message, then scrolling to locate the boost. I guess I'm just saying it's not something most people are going to do.

The fact that "copilot is just for entertainment" according to its TOS is very amusing though, thanks for that. If it's just for entertainment, forcing it on everyone makes even less sense - akin to "you WILL watch this movie because WE say it's good".

@invadersil Yet they cram it into everything. Apparently 11 has some overlay even in games?

I am so glad I escaped from Windows before ever even seeing what 11 looked like up close.

@invadersil So they're taking the same route as tarot card readers. Makes sense, kinda.

@invadersil the term above that one is the really shady one

People are responsible for any action that copilot takes

Isn't this a serious violation of AI policy and guardrails?

@mahadevank That is a very good point. Microslop is truly trying to make it none of their responsibility, aren't they.
@invadersil from december this year, this kind of disclaimers will stop to have value in the EU. LOL

@invadersil isn't this the same warning they put on dildo packaging?

Actually, given how fucked everything is, that kinda makes sense.

@invadersil waiting for terms like adult novelty, may induce cancer in California, batteries not included etc
@invadersil
same as TOS for tesla
only for entertainment. wheels may fall off. door handles don't always function. do not use for important tasks. use at own risk.
@invadersil chef's kiss 👨🏻‍🍳
@invadersil
So we're at the point where the lawsuits are eating up the profits made from marketing bullshit 🤗

@invadersil was pretty much expecting this, and even more, like in the text entry field.

Particularly after the lady who dropped her legal team and pursued action against her insurance company with ChatGPT legal briefs. The insurance company and their lawyers are suing OpenAI for practicing law in the state without a license.

Expect a disclaimer on all of them soon that says they’re not intended to be used for any serious purpose ever.

I’m expecting many more lawsuits.
