Vancouver Island marmots will soon come out of hibernation. Some colonies are located on ski hills so they close the ski resort for a few weeks in April.
This marmot is endemic to Vancouver Island. It's an endangered species that is making a remarquable recovery thanks to marmots.org

@CatherineBabault I love them so much. The vancouverensis and olympus (Olympics-specific) marmots are my fave.

After spending 30 days in a year on glaciers in 2019 I really came to appreciate them.

@badsamurai It's pretty special to spot a Vancouver Island marmot as they are about 400 of them and they live in alpine meadows.

@CatherineBabault oof, that’s low. Marmots are too friendly around humans for their own good. I have dumb luck when it comes to wildlife. For the PNW/BC I’ve been lucky enough to observe a fisher, lynx, pine martens, salamanders and newts, northern rubber boa and northern scorpion (used a uv light).

No spotted owls, wolverines or spirit bears—yet? The Great Bear Rainforest is on my list.
