I had one of those ideas that's either clever or stupid.

In order to make a pile of soil that's full of weed/grass roots usable I dumped the dirt in a bucket of water and mixed it well, then strained it into another bucket using hardware cloth to filter out all of the weeds.

Then I poured the water into an old collapsible tub hoping that as the water evaporates good soil will be left behind.

@grendel84 yeah some weeds have rhizomes or bulbs that will regrow if mixed with soil. I usually just pull weeds and leave them on top like a mulch.

Idk if you started from a patch of lawn like I did that was such a pain in the ass though

Sort of lawn. Last fall I moved our trapoline to expose a beautiful patch of grass free soil. Over the winter and into spring however grass grew into it.

It was actually kind of impressive - the entire yard was dead but that patch stayed green all winter, despite several instances of 4+ inches of snow and sub zero temps.

There was certainly enough that it took several days of labour and an electric cultivator to clean it out.
