Ugh.

I moved fully over to #kubuntu at the end of last year, getting rid of my Windows 11 install, and I'm really glad I did. But now it seems like Ubuntu is doubling down even harder on Snaps (which are just plain bad), and with some other stuff coming down the line (like the age attestation stuff), I'm starting to wonder if I should move to another distro.

I've used stuff based on #debian for so long that I honestly don't know how I'd manage on anything else. But it sort of feels like pretty much everything there is going in a similar direction, so I've started wondering where else I should go.

I don't understand why anybody in their right mind would use a rolling release model, so that rules out pretty much anything based on #arch (also, any system that fetishizes installing from the command line like it's 1999 has a priority matrix that I don't think I intersect with pretty much anywhere).

I could do #fedora as I ran that for a while back in the early 00's, but I suspect Red Hat's going to wind up doing the same thing Canonical is on some level.

All I want is to be able to game well on my desktop. For my file server and second desktop, I'm not really as worried, because I'm not trying to play Doom Eternal or whatever on them.

Bleh.

@doomchild

If you are on Ubuntu, why not just switch to #Debian? Or one of its other downstreams like Mint?

Disclosure: I'm a Debian developer and my only #gaming routine is #Emacs.

@debacle @doomchild FWIW, I switched from Pop!_OS (which retained a few Ubuntu annoyances) to Debian two or three years ago and it was painless. I remember the days when Debian was for wizards and I couldn't really get it to work. But in 2026, Debian with GNOME is a real pleasure right out of the box.

@jameshowell @debacle I was dual-booting W11 and #Pop_os for about a year, and I had a pretty good time with it. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure System76 is going to have to comply with these laws (which I completely understand).

I think the last time I used just straight #debian was around 2015. Maybe it's time to go back to basics.
