Dear #lazyweb, what's a good iPad (or if I must, macOS/Windows/web) app for mapping out unknown territory? Grid, icons/labels, ability to gauge distance, that sort of thing. Needs to NOT be real-world map based.

Diagram tools like Vizio/OmniGraffle are like 80% there but lack the distance gauging thing.

(Yes this is about #Subnautica, lmao. No I do not want to just use other peoples' maps!)

Mapping app outcome: I'm sure there are some I haven't tried yet, but amusingly, so far the one that checks all my boxes the best happens to be one I've overlooked for years: Apple's own 'Freeform' app.

✅ lines, icons, text
✅ diagramming-style discrete 'objects' (drag, resize, label, group etc)
✅ drawing lines shows current length, visible *above* my fingertip
✅ grid background (albeit not customizable)
✅ very well thought-out multi-touch UI

That'll do, pig. That'll do.

(Well, no pigs here. That'll do, Garryfish?)

@bitprophet https://trizbort.io ? It doesn't automatically calculate distance but you can add custom labels
Trizbort.io

_Trizbort.io_ is open-source adventure game mapping and code generation software based on the [Trizbort](http://www.trizbort.com) desktop app by [genstein](http://http://trizbort.genstein.net/) and [Jason Lautzenheiser](https://github.com/JasonLautzenheiser).

@minterpunct hmm this looks slick for dungeoneering but not great for my current use case. bookmarked tho!
@bitprophet Don't forget in three dimensions, too.
@offby1 yeaaaaa I’m trying to tackle one feature at a time, lmao. So far there hasn’t been an undue amount of actual layering, just “this zone is over here and has this much water on top of it”…

@bitprophet It’s been a few years, so I’ll bet I’d be lost again, but after a while I basically knew my way around the whole area.

(I played without the food/water mechanic because that part was zero fun for me, but the rest of it was amazing)
