Holy shit. The NDP voted out their establishment/continuity slate of officers. The delegates voted for the new progressive slate of candidates, signalling the evolution of the party back towards its socialist roots.

"There is an establishment slate and a progressive left slate which has Niall (president), Libby Davies (VP) and Keira Gunn (Treasurer)"

Massive upset in the officer leadership at #ndp2026 -- the "continuity" slate was defeated by a last-minute slate that included Libby Davies. Only people in the room are allowed to vote on this and so it not only seals the Lewis victory, but it also shows that support goes deep.

Bluesky Social

For those unfamiliar with Canadian politics, this is a *huge* deal. The so-called "left" party of Canada had been becoming increasingly centrist over the past decade+. A lot of these policies have been coming from the party institution/establishment.

So to see a change in the party officers like this?! I'm excited to see what the party becomes from here on out.

Expect a lot more paid shill attacks on the NDP on commercial socials from here on.

@mayintoronto Yeah... it was decent during the Jack Layton era, in so far as a political party can be, but lately it's been (from my perspective) too friendly with the Conservatives because the enemy of the Liberals is my friend.
@mayintoronto Libby Davies was my MP for a long time. She was also Depty Leader for over eight years under three leaders.
@IanAMartin sounds like a deeply respectable leader.
@mayintoronto Absolutely. Here’s more about her, and even have a look at the write up about her first husband: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libby_Davies
Libby Davies - Wikipedia

@IanAMartin @mayintoronto
I actually voted for Davies when I lived in East Van! And because I moved into the conservative interior, it was the only time in my life that I have been able to vote for the winning candidate.

@IanAMartin @mayintoronto

my former MP too when I first moved here. pretty stoked to hear this

@mayintoronto

Oh hells yes. Having an actual progressive party in Canadian politics is going to be amazing. Certainly better than Carney's '1980s Tory' bullshit, and far better than the recent NDP's wishy-washy refusal to engage with progressive concepts like those pesky human rights.

(I wish that the Green party had more sway, though. I'm pretty sure we all wish the Green party had more sway.)

@theogrin Could have happened if Elizabeth May actually stepped down for real for real and let new people take over.
@theogrin @mayintoronto the new Green leader in BC is fantastic, Emily Lowan
@TheresaReason Big fan of the provincial Greens!!! Federal greens not so much. @theogrin
@mayintoronto On that note, it was good to know that Ontario Green Party leader, Mike Schreiner, was out making the rounds at the Fight Ford protest in Guelph today.😁

@CAWguy @mayintoronto

Mike Schreiner has voted with Conservatives in the past for back-to-work legislation, effectively ending workers' right to strike in such instances.

Ontario government passes bill to prevent strike or lockout at OPG

The Ontario government has passed legislation to prevent a strike or lockout at a utility that generates roughly half of the province's power.

Global News
@markgrieveson @CAWguy I feel like enough has changed about the party around him that he might vote differently now, 7 years later.
@theogrin @mayintoronto we used to feel that way about the Greens in the UK and now they're becoming something, go Zack Polanski!

@mayintoronto it says further AB and Sask are ready to walk out if Lewis wins. Good. Let them create their own parties then

They want to serve corporate oil interests and prop up a carbon economy thats killing us all.

We want a clean energy future, wealth redistribution and capitalism dismantled.

We are not the same.#NewNDP

@TheresaReason It'd be interesting to see how many delegates that will be. I don't think it'll be the whole provinces.
@mayintoronto it most likely is just talk, it would be foolish at this stage to cut the Federal Party loose. I think Avi has huge potential to get people excited about an alternative to the same old bs.

@TheresaReason @mayintoronto

If you want a BC only party, I guess that would be fine.

The NDP are a non-factor east of Ontario as it is.

@mayintoronto I'm at the convention, and yes this was an incredible victory for the more left forces. There is a huge momentum for change and a shift to the left. Should Avi win tomorrow, it makes it a little more difficult for him to be "Corbyn'd".
@mayintoronto wait, do we have a Socialist party again? Please?
@mayintoronto Damn that is big news and exciting to see!
@mayintoronto About time!!!
@PhoenixSerenity I'm really hoping they turn the party around and embrace decolonization. ❤️
@mayintoronto They're gonna need to whip BC NDP a lot to get there!
@mayintoronto or cut the BC NDP loose if they won't move away from rampant neoliberalism & trying to shred UNDRIP.
@PhoenixSerenity @mayintoronto Bc Greens Emily Logan’s focus on economic injustice & inequality has much more in common with Lewis than Eby does …
@pinhman @mayintoronto
She was completely silent when I asked about covid & public health policies that are still killing & disabling people. All politicians normalized ableism/social eugenics.
Good on her for the other stuff though.
@PhoenixSerenity I wonder if that's going to happen. I think the federal/provincial parties will split before that happens.
@mayintoronto Yeah - if it doesn't happen, the federal NDP will keep losing votes in BC.
@mayintoronto I may need to start donating a bit their way, depending on how the leadership election goes.
@mayintoronto @PapyrusBrigade
Just a note, Davies won by acclamation, because Ricardo is a francophone and Davies' opponent is also a francophone, and the president and VP must not be both francophones or anglophones. An interesting rule, which is why they ran as slates; with one francophone and one anglophone running for president, the election of the president guarantees the election of the VP.

@mayintoronto

A few friends were discussing the NDP leadership. We genuinely are not sure if leaning more to the left really helps or not.

Using long serving provincial premiers as examples, like Gary Doer and Roy Romanow, they were pretty moderate. Romanow in particular enacted a number of service cuts and tax increases to create surpluses and pay down the debt. So far Wab Kinew has been pretty close to centre left.

The provincial NDP dominated BC in the '90s, but went through 4 leaders due to a series of scandals.

I think Kinew had some useful advice in his speech.

"Kinew’s speech suggested the NDP’s path back is not through trying to sound more radical than everyone else in the room. It is through sounding more useful to voters than the Liberals and more credible than the Conservatives on daily life. The emphasis on affordability, health care, workers and national self-respect was a reminder that left-of-centre politics still has to be translated into plain public concerns if it is going to win outside activist circles. That was the subtext of his advice to the leadership field: first earn power, then use it."

Wab Kinew’s Winnipeg speech gave federal New Democrats a blunt lesson in how to win - NetNewsLedger

Wab Kinew’s Winnipeg speech sounded less like a welcome and more like a blueprint for the federal NDP

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver If you talk to people who aren't partisans (like me), we were all ready to abandon the NDP and hope for the best with the Green Party.

I have no interest in the NDP in its current state. It's not about being "radical", but doing things that's needed for us to be a country that's good for our people. I just want to be inspired again.

@mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver

We had Green party at home (Kitchener Center) until vote splitting gave us a parachute conservative MP. :( Yes, it was hard to get things done as a voting block of two, but Mike did what he said, he meant what he said. (hope he wins next time)
The green party is the party the NDP want to be just better at it, tho Canadians can't seem to see around this misconception that the green party is only about hugging trees.

@tezoatlipoca Big fan of the provincial greens. Federally... eh.

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver

@mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver yeah we really like Aislinn Clancy round here. Kitchener Center is a weird bird, Green both federally and provincially.

@tezoatlipoca

Sadly, #Kitchener lost the federal Green MP, Mike Morrice, in last year's election. The current MP is Kelly DeRidder of the Conservatives.

(edit: Shoulda read the whole thread first)

@mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver

@bobjonkman @mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver

I know! DeRidder isn't even from around here!
Don't worry Mike'll be back.

@mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver

> I have no interest in the NDP in its current state.

I agree. Jack left the party in good position and people _trusted_ it. Mulcair frittered that away and Jagmeet, while charismatic, just didn't move any needles.
Im hopeful that Avi can bring the party back as it were. Heather, while an excellent career politician, I don't feel has.. i dunno what exactly.. to radically change anything.

@mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver

Welp, results are in:

<from torstar>
The number votes required to be elected is 35,466 / 70,934.

Tony McQuail: 945 votes.
Rob Ashton: 4,193 votes.
Tanille Johnston: 5,159 votes.
Heather McPherson: 20,899 votes.
Avi Lewis = 39,734 votes.

@tezoatlipoca Watching it live! This is a solid victory speech.

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver

@tezoatlipoca @mayintoronto @Sir_Osis_of_Liver he had a significant lead on Heather.

Good.
