What a day I've had.  I built a new linux server, then a #Mastodon server on top, and recovered a backup.  Thankfully all went to plan.

I've been running a theme specific Mastodon server for three and a half years.  On Wednesday morning the server failed and since then #IONOS (my server provider) have shown absolutely zero urgency in trying to resolve the hardware issue.

I could not wait any longer, nor disappoint my faithful users. This morning I spun up a new server elsewhere and started the slog to recovery.  Mastodon is a fickle beast!

Anyway, so far all is good and we're back in business.  I have put some beers in the fridge for later!

@daj that sounds stressful, but it's always a very good feeling when you need your backup and it actually works! Time to celebrate now 😉

@ruben I feel I can breathe again.  I was so annoyed I was letting a few hundred people down, and could get no sensible response from my hardware provider.  I held off on the recovery option as I hoped that they could fix their issue, but getting no response I eventually had to just get on and deal with it.

They've lost me as a customer that's for sure.  I have one other server with them and that will be going now, when I get a moment to migrate

@daj yes, I totally get that. I have no idea how good my hosting provider is in that departement (Hetzner), but currently I'm only hosting personal services—so for me, there's less at stake. And my website of course, but it'd be a very big stretch to say people rely on that, haha. If you're hosting services for others like you do, the stakes are higher of course. But I think it's a very valuable service to provide, self-hosting is definitely not for everyone. Very cool that you're willing to take this on for others 👍
