Roman Mosaic Unearthed โ€” Southwark, London, UK <3 What Time Reveals (9 Photos): https://streetartutopia.com/2026/03/28/from-buried-mosaics-to-trees-shaping-themselves-around-bricks/

Two archaeologists gently uncover a large Roman mosaic beneath a construction site near The Shard in central London. The vibrant geometric patterns, preserved underground for nearly 2,000 years, reveal a glimpse into an ancient dining room once part of a Roman mansio (guesthouse).

๐Ÿ’ก Nerd Fact: The same Southwark site later revealed a rare Roman mausoleum too, which means one patch of modern London preserved traces of both elite dining and later burial rituals from Roman times. @Street Art Utopia very impressive. but isn't it horrible to waste something beautiful and european on those brexit brits??
@jabgoe2089 Brexit was bad, but honestly the UK and EU are both facing very similar challenges. Hatred abounds. We are not so different, and to be honest I think your comment shows as much.

Nice! Not only the mosaics excavated a couple of years ago, but I also like the banyan tree roots!
@streetartutopia
Wow!
Manchester was also a Roman settlement. I wonder if there's more like that here.

@streetartutopia

what happens to these mosaics after they are uncovered, photographed and documented? are they turned back over to the property owners to be destroyed while continuing construction? are they removed somehow?

what will happen to this mosaic in particular?

@kitkat_blue @streetartutopia

Googling (or using another preferred search engine) your question gets the answer, but it's too long to include in my reply. Obviously, it can't answer what will happen to this one, though...

@Walrus @streetartutopia

Thanks for your eminently uninformative response, walrus. Shame on me for asking a question while google exists.

Here's the "too long" answer for those who'd rather get an answer in context rather than go off googling: ARCHAEOLOGICAL ARCHIVES: DISPOSAL AND RETENTION

https://heneb.org.uk/archive/dyfed/wp/wp-content/uploads/DISPOSAL-AND-RETENTION-OF-ARCHAEOLOGICAL-ARCHIVES.pdf

As for the instant case in Southwark? "Obviously" it *can* answer: It was removed from the site and preserved.

Consider me properly admonished tho!

@kitkat_blue @streetartutopia

No admonishment was intended! I was just trying to be helpful, as usual. Never mind.

@Walrus @streetartutopia

Walrus, you seem to be a decent, well-read, curious guy. So, benefit of the doubt duly given, allow me to give you hint about "helpful":

when someone asks a question in a forum, answering it with "just google it" is the exact opposite of "helpful". Why?

1)Helpful is giving an answer.
2)Googling takes more time than getting an answer in context. The answer also reaches more people.
3)Many people don't have the "google-fu" to get an answer.
4) or the time.

cheers!

@kitkat_blue
Last time I bother even trying. The attacks over the last few days have not been pleasant.
@streetartutopia
And now my spouse has decided they want a mosaic tile floor when we redo our floor. There goes our retirement fund!
@dancingtreefrog but in 2000 years just think how good it'll look when they find it
@streetartutopia
Beautiful!
Also raises the question of why the ancient Bretons didn't destroy it. Maybe they used it.
There are a lot all over Western Europe. Why do people have to destroy them??? Just let things as they are, they will will be covered by grass in months and protected for 1.5 to 2 milleniums. People are probably already busy, why lose time and energy at destroying things? Which benefits???

@streetartutopia Beautiful. It reminds me of the very first episode of the @fallofcivilizationspodcast.com. https://youtu.be/glKe9njOB24

So, it's means that Romans started the British civilization ๐Ÿ˜‚

@streetartutopia After looking at the picture for 5 minutes I became convinced it is AI generated (knee disappearing in mosaic on the left etc).

But after a quick research, turns out it is real: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/feb/22/lavish-roman-mosaic-is-biggest-found-in-london-for-50-years

Difficult times to know what to believe.
