I just saw someone unironically write that they do not trust Firefox because they do not trust a browser paid by google to include AI slop features, and that’s why they prefer Chrome.
@erkhyan I'm dumber for having read this.

@erkhyan at least Firefox now has an off switch, after latest updates, if you don't want to take the tiny step to waterfox or librewolf, which are both firefox without the AI scrapcode

Chromes won't help you like that

@erkhyan this made my entire brain skip a moment and make a record scratch noise
@erkhyan "I don't trust the foxes running the henhouse, and that's why I moved to the fox's den."

@erkhyan
I mean, Mozilla stated publicly that they were confused at the concept of "consent" when people asked them not to put AI in their products. That might be a reason to put a pause on trust... How much better are the new user agreements for Firefox than chromium now that they are selling our data? (Honest question, i don't know) How will they change in the future? There is a trend now

I like Vivaldi (it's chromium)🙃
I also like Water Fox but i think they're riding a sinking codebase.

So the way i see it, i choose the system that ruined Firefox or i stay with a ruined Firefox, and I'm not looking to be a martyr for my browser politics (i am doing that for too many other things already)

@erkhyan And what's why you don't expect a Chrome user's logic to make sense
@erkhyan 😅 You don't know what you don't know... I hope you explained it kindly
@erkhyan @soatok "No credible browser would ship with AI slop features without also including spyware, and that's why I prefer Chrome!"
@erkhyan this is so stupid the word stupid just committed suicide.

@erkhyan

😂🤣🤦‍♂️

@erkhyan

"I can hear the Cuckoo singing in the Cuckoo-Berry tree."

@erkhyan Next time suggest Librewolf to them. Not paid by google and no AI slop included.

As a bonus, uBlock is built in and other privacy goodies!

@ItsePerkele @erkhyan I use LibreWolf... uBlock is built-in???

(sure, I just migrated my Firefox profile that already had uBlock, so I might not noticed it)

@qgustavor @erkhyan

Built in/pre-installed.

Tomtato/potato

@ItsePerkele I do not recommend LibreWolf to anyone unless they’ve already signaled to me that they’re a privacy hardliner.

And most average users aren’t privacy hardliners.

@erkhyan

Why not?

Works fine for me, I haven't had a single problem in the two months I've used it.. I also installed it on my dad's laptop and he doesn't know much about computer stuffs and he hasn't had any problems with it.

I would totally recommend it to everyone, especially the people who are not privacy hardliners, they are the ones who need it the most lol.

But also, Waterfox is another one to recommend.

@ItsePerkele I wouldn’t do it because I’m going to get a dozen phone calls telling me that such or such website doesn’t work or display correctly, and it turns out the reason why is because of the browser’s privacy stance.

On my personal machine, I was absolutely turned off by the fact that things like timezones and dark mode need to be set manually for each and every website. That’s a level of privacy that feels to me like key-locking every door in my house and only opening them on a need-to-walk-through basis.

@erkhyan

Hmm, did you try it long time ago? Maybe a update has fixed those issues. I haven't had any of those problems. Dark mode and time zones work fine, I didn't even know that was or used to be a issue.

Tbh, if I wasn't able to set dark mode on for everything, I'd have quit it as well, I can't stand bright things on my screen lol.

@ItsePerkele I’ve actually never tried the browser. I’m basing my opinion on the FAQ they have on their website.
LibreWolf Browser

A custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom.

@erkhyan someone should tell them
@erkhyan I see this cognitive distortion a lot. People don't back up and compare with a baseline, they just fuzzily judge based on how frequently they see a conversation happening, causing them to get things exactly backwards. I don't know what to do about it!

@erkhyan I mean...it's not...it's not *wrong*

Google does not, in fact, pay themselves* to put AI in Chrome

*Actually, depending on how Alphabet does their internal accounting, they very well could be paying themselves to put AI in Chrome

@erkhyan Reminds me of all those people who threatened to switch to Brave because they didn't want to deal with Firefox getting worse... when Brave somehow has those same issues amplified up to eleven
@erkhyan Oh, my...Who wants to tell them? LOL
@pitermach @erkhyan Minor opinion, but you'll better try SeaMonkey. Remember the Mozilla Application Suite? you'll better donate! https://www.seamonkey-project.org
The SeaMonkey® Project

@erkhyan Don't Google fund all the major browsers in this way (or at least, the ones that aren't built on Chromium!)?
At least with FF, you can turn al;l the slop options off with a single click - in fact, the latest version explicitly asks if you want them on or off when you first launch it!

@erkhyan

"Wait, there's microplastic in my frozen dinners?!?! From now on, I'm eating nothing but pure, natural arsenic."

@erkhyan
WTF?
Did they really mean Chrome as in Google Chrome, rather than the sanitized/hardened forks?
(Ungoogled Chromium, Helium, etc)
@moses_izumi They really did argue that Google Chrome contains less AI slop than Firefox.
