I keep hearing from more and more random people that they switched or are at least trying out #Linux .

And I am afraid that Linux adoption is getting to a point where most people who could / would switch to it already did. The rest won't be able to clear the "barrier to entry" or some issue / missing feature will be a deal-breaker for them.

#FOSS community should make some sort of desktop-Linux-wide issue tracker / knowledgebase in order to analyse and document the common Linux complaints.

Here are some examples of the complaints that I had in mind:

I believe that analysing and documenting the issues is the first step towards resolving them.

#1 consumer can't walk into bestbuy/similar and walk out with a Linux preinstalled laptop which let's them watch YouTube and HBO and death scroll.

Done. This is your list.

I'm not sure that applies, given that ChatGPT or Gemini can easily guide non technical users through the install, explaining it in layman's terms

@nmstoker @testman Okay I hear what you are saying. But in a test environment I literally just asked Gemini what I should do in a situation and how to fix something and not even 10 minutes in, it broke my test. AI is not fully ready for this right now, and people refuse to fact check things AI feeds them.

@DerpDerpington

my two cents here, if I may. It took me about 3 hours with help of Gemini to install #Arch on my old laptop.
Yes, there were mistakes. But I don't think that, say, installing #linuxmint is harder than installing #windows .
So, even a noob csn go and try it.
In my opinion, though - the majority of people will never care about #linux , #digitalprivacy anf old that stuff, as long as their #windows work.
Sad but true.

@nmstoker @testman

@rsmedia - yes, I agree that if people are happy with Windows they typically won't consider moving.

However it's clear recently that MSFT is undermining the quality of Windows to push their agenda over the needs of the user - that's why there is a constant stream of slip ups and unappealing new "features" (disruptive ads, defaults triggering unwanted actions). Unless MSFT step back (and they may, given recent announcements), it will drive people to consider alternatives (be that Linux, Mac etc)

@nmstoker

Do you wanna know somethin'? ..to borrow Elisha Edwards' (TNA Impact) signature slogan - I keep thinking about why would a normal Joe Sixpack want to switch?
Unless the need for the #digitalprivacy (to start with something) is hammered to them as often as possible, they don't have a need. Theuly use a #Browser , #vlc player, #Spotify and they watch #youtube , unless they start giving a sh..damn about their data being sold, them being the product, until then they won't feel the need.
But in the end of the day - histoey is not moved by the majority of silent watchers or fence-sitters.
