This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
Personally, nothing affirms my decision to abandon Twitter more than the replies to @[email protected]’s post there. The number of unhinged replies to something relatively straightforward is unreal. I really appreciate block lists and the nuclear block here. x.com/maxdkozlov/s...
The Trump regime got rid of 10,109 PhDs in science and related fields, representing 14% of the total number of PhD scientists in the federal workforce.

U.S. government has lost more ...
@davidho.bsky.social and what did we get for all that? Higher prices, more corruption and loss of respect around the world

@davidho.bsky.social

Trump doing Putin's work.

@leeolds @davidho.bsky.social Trump could do nothing without the Senate's complicity. They can remove him whenever it strikes their fancy.
@davidho.bsky.social I don't disagree, but what is going on with the Y-axis on that chart?
@Kadin2048 @davidho.bsky.social Probably the upper 0 and 5 are really 10 and 15 respectively, and the tens digit got cropped somehow.

Trump’s nominees are backed by major players in the world of climate obstruction – from Project 2025 and Koch network fixtures to oil-soaked Christian nationalists.

Look at Trump's oligarchs & the international order & wondering how many of the USSR's mistakes they plan on recreating.

The biggest is the failure to invest in the future.

@Npars01 @davidho.bsky.social ... good context. very appropriate last name. LOL
@davidho.bsky.social Recovery isn't part of what's happening. This country died but other, better countries will grow in its place.

It 's called Self-Destruction, and sadly, we all pay for it.

I think there is no more "might" any more, in either sense of the word. We have allowed ourselves to be destroyed.

@davidho.bsky.social

The entire article is a must-read.

Thanks for sharing.

@davidho.bsky.social A fine example of the civilisational cycle Graeber & Wengrow described in their ”History of Everything”

1. Progress is built by egalitarians
2. A shining city based on cooperation forms
3. Warlike tribes with no cooperation keep hacking at it, finally manage to take over
4. The warlike adopt the customs of the city, pretending it was always theirs
5. Original inhabitants keep leaving as the warlike run the city to the ground
6. Economy fails
7. Pretty ruins

@gimulnautti @davidho.bsky.social The only flaw being that many of the ruins are not pretty and will be toxic.
@davidho.bsky.social
On its way to be equally advanced in science and innovation as a third world country.
@davidho.bsky.social Tragic. I'm surprised at the Department of Energy though, isns't it about nuclear energy?
@davidho.bsky.social @Tony_Meredith Many in the US will die of ‘fixable’ diseases as well. But the oligarch won’t care for them. They can afford health care. And that is before the rest of the madness.

@davidho.bsky.social What is it about the Right Wing and Anti (some) Science. Is it just that contrarianism is a core part of the grift?

What are you against?
Well, what have you got?

@davidho.bsky.social

Unfortunately Canadians and our government seem slow to catch on the monumental generational opportunity this affords us in our own institution building, I am concerned this chance will pass us by.

#Canada #CdnPoli

@DavidM_yeg @davidho.bsky.social

I agree

Instead of putting ten's (hundred's?) of billions into military spending we should be running a modern version of ww2's Operation Paperclip and recruiting scientists driven out of the US system while simultaneously building out our education systems.

@RantingCanuck @DavidM_yeg

Meanwhile we're not even retaining our own experts. Utter failure of vision at the federal level.

@davidho.bsky.social We passed "might be" already. The US empire is dead, it just isn't smart enough to lie down.
