It's super easy for closed source software companies to smear FOSS developers, with just a hint, a rumor or an insinuation. And they have the big money megaphone to shout through. So easy to shut out FOSS through FUD.

"Hey, did you hear? RMS is a perv."

"Did you know that ESR is a supporter of communist China?"

"The author of Brave is...*gasp*...a right-winger."

That's all it takes. Nobody says, "Bill Gates is an evil man, hoarding wealth."
