Hi #BikeNite, it's Wednesday here, and time for our weekly call for questions. See below. I hope you are having a good week!

---

Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific standard time (UTC-8)!

This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. There is room for more!

(BikeNite is a Q&A type discussion on the Fediverse.) #BikeTooter cc @bikenite

Asking for the technical terms for what I want.

Air pumps for bicycles used to screw on. Nowadays everything seems to be "push on and then move a lever."

Very bad experiences with the latter.

Am I doing it wrong?

When I've finished pumping I move the lever back, it still doesn't want to come off. I often end up losing the air pressure I just put in getting it off, and at least once I ruined the tube by pulling the valve off.

Can I get a screw-on adapter? Named what?

@ascentale @bikenite

(I asked this the other day and got some good answers, but more would be welcome.)

@cptbutton @bikenite thanks! Adding #BikeNitePQ so I can find this when I populate the list

@ascentale @cptbutton @bikenite I’ve had good luck with these: greenlinehose.com/buy/product/…

(Full disclosure: I work for the company)

@powerword @ascentale @bikenite

Sorry I don't see how that will help. If it is stuck into the end of my existing pump there is no feasible way to turn it to screw on and off, and if is not stuck into my pump, it will be letting the air out.

I need something that connects to my existing pump which can be screwed on and off quickly which still attached.

(And a pony, of course.)

@ascentale @cptbutton @bikenite No worries, it’s not obvious from the photo, but the female valve end swivels to tighten onto the stem (it’s not one solid piece). I have used one to repair a pump with a broken pump head, and have also created a whip hose with a male Shrader valve on one end and one of these swivel females on the other, to act as an extension when needed.
@[email protected] @ascentale @cptbutton @bikenite Wait, what sort of valve do you have? Is it like car tires? Or is it the thinner one, with the valve that screws in, that seems to be more, "high performance tires"? I've got a little hand pump, that works for both (for varying degrees of work), but is basically good for a bit of a top up. And to get it to work, you need to unscrew the front of the attachment, and flip a bit around. It also probably doesn't work at all any more.

@JigmeDatse @ascentale @bikenite @powerword

The same as car tires. Only kind I've ever seen.

I don't understand the last part there, I assume that is talking about the other kind of valve.

@cptbutton @ascentale @bikenite @[email protected] I had (still do?) bikes with both types of valves. The pump did a decent job of handling both. But it wasn't good if I was doing much more than the usual, "I'm checking my tire pressure, yeah, could use a little top up". To switch, it required unscrewing the front of the attachment, and flipping a part around. I suspect the fatter stem would be obvious it wasn't working, as it doesn't even go on. The thinner one, probably would be popping off or something as you're trying to pump.

The different types didn't quite understand why. I hope you find something.

Oh, this also ended up being good, as I could just bump it and it would pop off quickly. But yes, always "go a bit too much" when filling, as I've never managed to not end up with it not leaking more than is ideal.
