#BikeNite A3: Shouting.

I've been thinking how group ride leaders can stay in touch with the sweeps and corkers. Maybe a group call on cell phones? But not everyone has an unlimited cell phone plan.

Maybe whistles? The sweep can whistle twice to get the leader to slow down (spreading out too far is the most common problem I see on group rides), maybe three times for a full stop.

Are there standardized whistle codes for this kind of thing? ( #BikeNitePQ ?)

@ascentale @bikenite How do you protect children while you are carrying them on your bicycle? Do you try to advertise their presence, in hopes drivers will be more careful around you? Do you use flags, or a "baby on board" placard? I'm asking for additional precautions you might take for kids, aside from what you already do to protect yourself.

We have a large front loader with a baby car seat adapter, and it will be our main form of child transport, we're car free.

@ascentale @bikenite for party pace group rides, we play music - If you do similar on your rides, what is your setup, and how effective is it? Any tips or tricks?

@cptbutton @bikenite thanks! Adding #BikeNitePQ so I can find this when I populate the list

@ascentale @bikenite What communications systems do people use for talking with other bicyclists while riding?

We used these Bluetooth helmet "radios" by Sena, and they were extremely helpful on long rides where we couldn't bike side by side, such as when we moved house by bike. But honestly these were mediocre helmets, if either the Bluetooth or the helmet dies then you must replace both, and annoyingly you had to do a dance to pair the helmets every time.

This would be another great question for # BikeNite! You can send Bike Nite Potential Questions #BikeNitePQ to Phil @ascentale who relays them on Friday nights (depending on your timezone), and then Fedizen across the globe answer with the # BikeNite hashtag. The answers trickle in all week long, so Bike "Nite" isn't entirely accurate.

I have a Raleigh Randonneur from the early nineties. It's been well looked after, but had many years of regular use, often heavily loaded. The frame was slightly dented at the back of the seat tube by a bike shop many years ago. All the components apart from front and back rack have been replaced over time.

What would you suggest I should check to help me decide if I need to replace this much loved old bike?

@ascentale #BikeNitePQ Welcome input by anyone who has experience and recommendations with fluorescent leg coverings and/or ankle lights.

Are rising gas prices helping any of your friends take cycling more seriously?

Part two: have you (or your bike group) discussed how cycling fits into emergency preparedness planning?

I feel some urgency about both of these issues.

@LovesTha

I did have a (mostly) clean bandana in my pannier, which held me together until I got into town and could buy a box of bandages. That's in my pannier now, along with an empty box for more first aid stuff.

What should a cycling first aid kit contain? Anything special not found in other first aid kits? What about a first aid kit for group ride organizers?

P.S. Photos of your first aid kit encouraged!
