New 'Lord of the Rings' Movie From Stephen Colbert in Development

Stephen Colbert and his son are developing a brand new film in the "Lord of the Rings" universe.

Variety
What's next? Conan OBrien doing the next Tron? Ellen Degeneres to reprise Stargate? Oprah doing a sequel to Battlestar Galactica? This is madness.

@TheBreadmonkey

Better those loonies than frickin' Jeff Bezos and the bloody awful Ellisons. :E

@TheBreadmonkey Colbert is known to be a geek not only about LOTR, but he is knowledgeable of the whole Tolkien Lengendarium. He is legit.
@TheBreadmonkey I love this. More nerds should develop films! That must be the job of a lifetime for him, nice one.
@TheBreadmonkey Claudia Winkleman has been approached to create a reboot of Sapphire and Steel
@TheBreadmonkey
Given how deeply knowledgeable about LOTR he is, that is a very well earned break from frickin reality for him.
I have only one problem with this:
Stephen Colbert might not have enough time to continue the much more important work of keeping us all sane and mentally intact during the worst of times the world has seen since WWII.
Stephen! You must not forget your responsibilities against we the people!

@TheBreadmonkey This might please @sennoma as Colbert is a well-known Tolkien super-nerd.

@frykitty @TheBreadmonkey @sennoma

Yeah, we're going to be getting the lore-iest lore from the depths of the footnotes to the appendices.

Rejoice.

@TheBreadmonkey About how I felt when I first heard the fella behind Braindead, Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles was doing it.

Colbert's a massive Tolkien nerd, though.

@TheBreadmonkey he's like the hugest LoTR nerd. Like, can quote the Similarillion nerd.

@tezoatlipoca

They are hilarious!

@TheBreadmonkey @tezoatlipoca and he has a cameo appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Stephen Colbert's cameo in The Hobbit [HD]

@tezoatlipoca @TheBreadmonkey Paramount seems to have disappeared it from YouTube but the one with James Franco is a classic

Franco: name three -- just three! -- of the Valar
Colbert: [rattles off full names of all 14 Valar]
Colbert: You come into MY HOUSE...!

@TheBreadmonkey @aburka so, like I get the concern about random celebrities doing pet project rehashes of cherished properties, but w.r.t. anything Tolkein, I could think of worse people to be handling it than Colbert.

Also Colbert knows what he's good at (being a news/satire/talk show host) and what he's not, he'll executive produce it, but he'd leave the rest to experts.

@tezoatlipoca @TheBreadmonkey yeah I trust him to handle this

@aburka @TheBreadmonkey counterpoint to this, what cherished property was absolutely ruined by someone's vanity pet project?

I know there are lots, Im drawing a blank at the moment.

@tezoatlipoca @TheBreadmonkey I didn’t know! So cool, I love how excited he was in that video 😁 They’ll do a great job with the new stories I’m sure. Big LOTR fan (although sadly I don’t know as much as he does) so looking forward to those.
@TheBreadmonkey He's a Tolkien fan, I actually kind of trust him. The other thing is that after the execs ruined The Hobbit and the shitshow that is Rings of Power I do not trust any new Tolkien adaptations.
@Gargron @TheBreadmonkey yeah as far as I’m concerned it’s the same tier as Henry Cavill doing the warhammer show. He’s a giant fan who knows the material but Hollywood is still Hollywood
@TheBreadmonkey We’ve been crying out for the Farmer Maggot and Tom Bombadil buddy cop movie.
@TheBreadmonkey Not entirely surprised, as he's a HUGE Tolkien fan. HUUUUUUGE. And he's intelligent, and has connections. Might turn out okay.
@TheBreadmonkey Seriously, though, he's like a Tolkien scholar.
@TheBreadmonkey I assume that this is an April Fool that escaped on the wrong day because of the Americans' idiotic date format.
@TheBreadmonkey I know he's a big fan and has a lot of time on his hands now. And he's free to do whatever. But yeah, why indeed.
@TheBreadmonkey @Guillotine_Jones There are Tolkein nerds and then there are fans who swoop in after 25 years to make a movie that is ONLY Tom Bombadil. Incredible
@beandreams @TheBreadmonkey @Guillotine_Jones my daughter’s middle name was named after Bombadil’s girlfriend.

@3janeTA @beandreams @TheBreadmonkey @Guillotine_Jones I loathed the Bombadil chapters when I first read them.

now I am older and wiser, they are the best. the absolute best. I am looking forward to this. <3

@TheBreadmonkey
He's a life-long LOTR scholar, I trust him. (He's the most likely to get Tom Bombadil some screen time.)

Also, I enjoyed his (voice) role as the Digital Dean in (the now cancelled) Starfleet Academy,

I wouldn't rule out Conan, with his history of writing for Simpsons, among other shows, but just maybe not Tron...

@TheBreadmonkey
Also, this is the first time I recall seeing "ya'll" in an article. I'm inclined to think it's a "misprint" of "y'all" since "y'all will" would be the only reason to use it that way. And naturally, "y'all'll" is the preferred form for that case. 🤓
@TheBreadmonkey
... Heh I wonder who the Sauron character will be based on
@TheBreadmonkey I think I could trust him. He has his reputation as the biggest Tolkien nerd to hold up.
@TheBreadmonkey Hey if Ben Stiller and Adam Scott can be involved in something like Severance, then Stephen Colbert can do this
@TheBreadmonkey Why, he laments. The existing films are fine. Why.
