Question: I recently acquired an old TDS420A without probes (for free), getting the proper probes for it is going to be about €450. Should I just buy an equivalent modern scope? (€700-€800)

@kelpana Do you personally need the Tekprobes? They work find with bog standard probes if you don't want the extra features.
@jamesb yeah, I looked into it and ordered two new OWON 200Mhz probes from the evil place for €40.
@kelpana any Tek probe that has the contact for the 10x function should work fine, like a P6106. Those can be had for reasonable sums.
If you get a probe without that little contact, it just won’t automatically change the vertical deflection scale when you use a 10x probe (which you’ll generally want to be doing). All the other contacts on the scope are for fancier probes that you can probably get by without.

@kelpana

That oscilloscope should work with normal passive probes. I wouldn't expect a €800 'scope to come with active probes.
