#guitar players: how do you get better at fretting with your left thumb?
@eyesquash Start playing songs with Dsus2/F# chords? I dunno, I kinda feel like you just get used to it over time with practice, like everything else.

The main thing I tell people is not to “broomhandle” the neck: your palm should not be in contact with the back of the neck.

Bigger hands? 😆

I have basically ALWAYS played the open D chord with my thumb wrapped around fretting an F# on the E string. You might try that. It's an easy way to work it into routine playing and get used to having it be a fretting finger.

@TheGreatLlama I can do the F# in open D, just. Working on the intro to Achilles Last Stand. Have struggled with the F in Wind Cries.
I don't think my thumb flexes as far as some folks'.
Thanks.
@eyesquash I think it’s mostly a matter of practice, but something that helped me was to stop worrying about “good hand position“ and get comfortable with the minimum amount of thumb pressure and coverage needed to get a clear note. I’m really “pulling” the string more than pressing down.
@eyesquash practice Jimi tunes like Wind Cries Mary

@eyesquash

Big hands help. If your hand size isn’t there, I think a player tends not to go there, and it is likely a habit discovered naturally more than with purpose

Richie Havens uses A LOT of thumb.
