“That’s the same timber you had in the tray yesterday”

“Uh, you must have me mistaken for somebody else”

“I don’t think so. Step out of the vehicle please, I am arresting you on suspicion of operating a double-lane power vehicle without lawful excuse.”

@Unixbigot Never! Slams door and takes off with a cloud of tyre smoke! #TootFic #PowerOnStoryToot
@skyfire747 SOL control, rogue DPV blue utility truck registration RAPTOR heading north on M7 from exit six. You are clear to fire.
@Unixbigot slams brakes and swerves hard on to exit ramp, then heads for hidden underground bunker...
@Unixbigot I’m going to need ExplainPOST today…
@futzle @Unixbigot my take was "unrealistic excuse for oversize ute vs bicycle" and lanes have been split in 2

@uep @futzle yes. A number of futures speak of “half lane cars”. One of stephenson’s novels features them. One of heinlein’s post-apocalyptic novels talks of rare “authorized power vehicles” (everyone else uses animal-drawn vehicles, or catches trains). So in my future, Ford Rangers are “double lane” cars and their use is strictly limited to those with demonstrable need-to-haul.

There are reports in brisbane of people carrying mannequins to qualify for multiple-occupant carpool lanes.

@Unixbigot @futzle Heinlein also had giant travellator roads.. one of the very first SF stories I can remember reading. And a direct cause to then read one of his novels, Citizen of the Galaxy. Which was progressive and political and I liked it a lot, at age 5. Quite formative.

Somehow, while the ideas in many of his other books were clever, they never quite hit that same character engagement, and it took me a very long time to understand why, even long after his later dire churn.
