What browser do you all use and why?

I really like Firefox, but on the other hand I really hate AI.

#browser #ai #mozilla #boost

@thehole I use Firefox (and admit I am a little biased). You can quite happily use it and get awesome new features without using AI - there are even some recently added AI controls that turn that kind of thing off.
@plwt yes, I did hit the switch with that, but I am not happy to support a product which goes into this direction, even if it's free.
Firefox’s AI Kill Switch is a Trap: How Mozilla Made AI Your Problem

TL;DR: Mozilla recently released AI controls for Firefox: a single control panel that lets people disable AI features in the browser or pick and choose which to leave on. On the surface, this sounds like a win for user choice in an era of AI-everything.

@yoasif

I'll read it more thoroughly tomorrow, but yeah, the fact that it is opt-out instead of opt-in has been noticed

@plwt

@thehole @plwt There is a video if you want to veg out, but appreciate you reading! 🫡

@yoasif It's not that but the fact that I'm still sick and it's close to 22:00 here, so I should go to bed

@plwt

@thehole

Well, it is either a fork of chromium or a fork of Firefox

Dillo isn't yet at the stage it could be a replacement

I am currently on Waterfox (fork) but have heard good things about Librewolf

There is also Vivaldi (chromium based)

@Aprazeth do you know what size of teams are working on those forks?

@thehole @Aprazeth Librewolf is a very light "fork", really more a set of configurations, along with some additional privacy features.

Would really love to see work like the Tor Uplift project for Mozilla forks - we'll see if we get there.

@yoasif @thehole
Yep, none of the forks have enough people to do a clean breakaway from Firefox and maintain a browser on their own

@Aprazeth @thehole That's not saying much. Somehow, Microsoft can't even manage it with Edge.

Browsers are the new operating systems.

@yoasif @thehole

Microsoft somehow managed to add a remote code execution in a plain text editor so... Yeah they are currently adrift - and that is putting it mildly.

@yoasif @thehole @Aprazeth Mullvad browser is probably the closest for that
@jonpsp @thehole @Aprazeth I think the focus on privacy makes it a poor choice for a neutral upstream, and nothing else depends on it, so it isn't like it already occupies that niche.
@thehole Using #librewolf for most things now.
