Cleaning up some files. This ad on an old bit of newspaper found in our attic in last house.

I'm tempted to swing by and see if they'll still honour the offer:

#Ottawa #SparksStreet

Oh sure, rather than honour their 55 cent Sunday dinner, they've pulled down the whole hotel and run away.

Bait and switch!

Another bit of the newspaper fragment seems to be describing damage as bombs fall on central London during the Blitz.

So seems to be 1940-41 range.

#LondonBlitz #VictoriaStation

The text refers to a picture not included in the scraps. But it says:

"One view shows the Dornier falling near Victoria Station. Another depicts the bomber's twin-tail and others show soldiers examining wreckage of the Dornier's tail and firemen removing wreckage of the plane from shops on which it crashed.

People on Wilton-road next to Victoria Station, ran for their lives when they saw the heavy bomber hurtling toward them."

The first pic must be this one:

The account of the event is pretty harrowing. An RAF pilot rammed the bomber and busted off its tail, then bailed out of his Hurricane and barely survived.

(There was some later debate over whether it was intentional or not)

@ottaross I've not looked into this particular incident in detail but there are other cases in the Battle of Britain of clearly intentional ramming, P/O Kenneth Mackenzie being dubbed the "Messerschmitt Rammer" by the press.

@ottaross My mother and her two little brothers were evacuated from London during the war. One of them later moved to B.C.
@lopta What a dramatic time that was. Sadly lots of echos of that in the modern news.
@ottaross Too many echoes sadly. As the generation who lived through it die off, there's a danger their lessons are lost with them.
@ottaross I don't see an expiry date on that. Gotcha, Plaza Hotel!
@zazzoo The cowards ran away and took their hotel with them.

@ottaross Being a sucker for Ottawa history I got curious. They say it was torn down to make room for the C.D. Howe building in 1974. Given how liens get transferred to the new owners I would assume Olympia and York would have owed you a roast turkey dinner if not for the fact that they went bankrupt 30 years ago after getting involved in Canary Warf.

It looks like the federal government bought the land back from them. You can contact MΓ©lanie Joly, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development here.

Minister Joly owes you a turkey dinner for 55c plus HST.

@zazzoo Aha! Nice, well found.

I'll wire ahead and tell the minister I want the turkey, and all the fancy relishes.

@ottaross Your turkey now being a federal matter, make sure to throw in "I'm willing to take this all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary!" at the end. πŸ˜‚
@ottaross I can get nostalgic sometimes about the classic Canadian "Hot chicken sandwich"! Slices of roast chicken on a bed of squishy white bread, smothered in gravy. Peas. Pot of tea.
@ottaross mayyyyyybe they'll honour the offer. Adjusted to inflation 🫠

@ottaross

Go for the Special Sunday Dinner, stay for the air conditioning.

@Sanderde Who could have predicted that they'd get so carried away with the air-conditioning part that it's now fully outdoors.
