@[email protected] attempted murder x6

£100- posted by Seraphine

@Transbian_Arsonists @[email protected] the perpetrator has corrupt associates in the government and they reduced their fine
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett There isn't even any evidence that the perpetrator tried to ride a train at all, with a ticket or not 🤔
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett i feel like this detail brings it to the funniest thing ive seen all month
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett also the fact its this low implies they were authorised to be on the railway in the first place (otherwise it would be £1000 for trespassing)
@CauseOfBSOD @[email protected] maybe its in scotland

@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett is the fine lower there?
@CauseOfBSOD @[email protected] tresspassing isnt a thing except in specific protected sites

@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett oh yeah right

i would have thought that the railways would be protected as critical infrastructure (or at least as a "dont go here you fucking idiot" type deal)

@CauseOfBSOD @[email protected] protected sites are pretty much exclusively historical or natural (or military)

@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett ah so stuff that really really matters then
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett i suppose most people have the sense not to go on the railway outside of a train except for to cross a level crossing. at least id hope so.
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett then again you see RAIB reports and safety digests on collisions and near misses, as well as videos online of near misses.
@Transbian_Arsonists @kouett i mean i suppose the maximum penalty is death regardless of region
@kouett @rail this is what I have been saying the whole time this stupid meme’s been going around
@RinaVolpina @kouett @rail Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! All traffic at $StationName stop immediatly! I repeat: All traffic at $StationName stop immediatly! People on the track.
@LinaBlue @kouett @rail the perfect time to hit the big enticing red button on the GSM-R 😸

@LinaBlue @RinaVolpina @kouett @rail That's more like marine phraseology. UK railway telephone protocol would be to pick up the platform telephone and say something like:
> Anytown signaller.

> This is an emergency call. $role $yourname at $location. Someone has fallen on the tracks at platform $number. Please block the line immediately

Not a railway professional but my partner worked somewhere that did e-learning for Network Rail and that was in their portfolio somewhere!

@LinaBlue @RinaVolpina @kouett @rail oh look a concise example of doing it right:

and a less concise real-world example of doing it wrong:

@kouett

I am here for the rail industry fighting back against anti-transit propaganda.

@kouett 100 quid for 1-4 cases of attempted murder and 5 cases of kidnapping?!

@beeeff @kouett Sounds about right for BTP.

It's also an immense stretch to assume they'd a) bother to investigate b) catch the perp.

@CryogenicIce9 @beeeff @kouett

British Transport Police aren't really there for anyone's safety, and aren't an important part of the solution to the posed problem, so that was a nice touch.

@kouett There's something humorous about 100 pounds for a murder attempt.

"Dramatic underreaction" kind of thing.
@kouett @fogti £100 penalty fare seems a bit low for attempted murder
@dpk @kouett @fogti Plus, the British Transport Police can't issue a penalty fare - only certain TOC (Train Operating Company) staff or TOC contractors can!

@kouett

All undermined when "the board" realizes they can save a few bucks by replacing the human with AI safety agent.

@kouett "This is an emergency call."
@kouett désolée, c'était trop tentant 😅
@[email protected] Delay repay for everyone!

@kouett @alice

Fun little tidbit; as I was on the train today, it suddenly halted quite rapidly. Few seconds later we get an announcement explaining that there may have been kids sighted along the tracks.

This is one of the busier tracks in the are. Every. Single. Train. Stopped.

It wasn't until it was confirmed -in person- the tracks were clear that we, at low speed initially, continued onwards.

Did the delay suck? Yes.
Did the passengers mind? Compared to the alternative; no.

@Aprazeth @kouett @alice theres a button on the GSM-R DCP that calls everyone in an area. when receiving such a call, drivers are meant to stop immediately until it is confirmed that they specifically can continue
@kouett If no emergency phone, and no mobile, does shorting out the two rails work in UK to show occupancy on track?
@undefined_variable @kouett Very likely, yes. We've barely moved beyond a single trial of ETCS on a remote branch line, so I think the signal circuits still mostly work by shorting between the two rails.

@trantion @undefined_variable @kouett Actually ETCS is deployed in the Thameslink core as well.

Apparently Network Rail is also starting to put it in up the ECML which surprised me (I would have thought it would cost too much). I think there are a few other places where its either planned to be installed, being installed, or already active.

@kouett Railway engineer here, approving
@[email protected] Since this is UK-focused, I'll yap about how the feather is pointing right but the points are diverging left
@kouett do the train’s hooves get caught in the TPWS grid?
@kouett This is the most nerdy meme edit I've seen in my life I think
@kouett I wonder if the original paper stated the problem in terms of trams precisely because those safety features would not be available?
@[email protected] what kind of a fuck legal system fines people 100 pounds for attempted murder
If you include murder-by-omission… @witix @kouett
@kouett
Want ETCS level 2 version 😉
@kouett without a strong union, most of that would be disabled because these 5 nobody are making hundred of people late for work
@kouett £100 ? For kidnapping and tying 6 people on track?
@kouett I thought the joke was going to be that everyone survives because the train never turns up
@[email protected] love this one and the one about slipping the switch

railway workers really saving lives from philosphers
