La quantità di nanoplastiche nell’acqua potabile negli Stati Uniti è stata enormemente sottovalutata, supportata da un nuovo studio che ha rivelato un livello di plastica nell’acqua del rubinetto e in quella in bottiglia 10-100 volte superiore rispetto a precedenti stime. I ricercatori hanno applicato metodologie avanzate, sciogliendo il mistero della presenza di plastica in queste fonti d’acqua.
Secondo la dottoressa Megan Jamison Hart, principal autrice dello studio e ricercatrice di scienze ambientali presso la Ohio State University, “è come la differenza tra osservare le stelle a occhio nudo e con un telescopio.” Insieme al suo supervisore, il professor John Lenhart, hanno spiegato che mentre le plastiche sono sempre state presenti, le tecniche analitiche utilizzate nello studio hanno permesso di rivelare molte più particelle rispetto ai metodi precedenti. “Abbiamo visto molte più stelle nel cielo della plastica,” hanno aggiunto.

The amount of nanoplastics in drinking water in the United States has been greatly underestimated, supported by a new study that revealed a level of plastic in tap and bottled water 10-100 times higher than previous estimates. Researchers applied advanced methodologies, unraveling the mystery of the presence of plastic in these water sources.
According to Dr. Megan Jamison Hart, lead author of the study and environmental science researcher at Ohio State University, “it’s like the difference between observing the stars with the naked eye and with a telescope.” Together with her supervisor, Professor John Lenhart, they explained that while plastics have always been present, the analytical techniques used in the study have allowed them to detect many more particles than previous methods. “We saw many more stars than plastic in the sky,” they added.
