Forever chemicals in my blood

From the BBC As I walked into the medical clinic for my blood test, all I could think about was how to avoid looking like a wimp on camera...

Awesome finding! 😎

In the interim, folks might throw a couple of #sardine fish into every wash cycle to remove #microplastics from waste water. They can conveniently be had in prepackaged cans at grocery stores.

Sardine-inspired washing machine filter removes 99% of microplastics

The home appliance can easily generate as much as 500 grams of microplastics each year.

Crickets munch on microplastics—especially if they have a big mouth

To a human, microplastics are very small at less than 5 millimeters (mm) wide. But to an insect, microplastics might be the same size as the food they usually eat. Researchers reporting in the journal Environmental Science & Technology have shown that crickets can and will consume polyethylene microplastics if their mouth is larger than the plastic particle. The study suggests that crickets—and likely many other insects—cannot distinguish plastic from food.

#Nanoplastics are #plastic particles smaller than 1,000 nanometers in diameter, or 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, and they are polluting our environment and our food, to the extent that they are now being found in human blood, lungs, placenta, and even breast milk.

Nanoplastics are everywhere: what is the health impact of these tiny particles? – UK Health Security Agency

Nanoplastics, and their slightly larger cousins microplastics, are polluting our environment and our food. The study of these tiny particles is still a relatively new field and in this blog post for British Science Week we’ll explore how scientists are

Optical sieve for nanoplastic detection, sizing and counting - Nature Photonics

An optical sieve—an array of optically resonant voids in gallium arsenide—enables sorting, detecting and counting nanoplastics as small as a few hundreds of nanometres at concentrations as low as 150 μg ml−1 in lake water samples.
