Nice going, got home to find the rest of the first tray of tomatoes have germinated... making it a 100% hit rate (a single germination in a pot is a "hit", I typically have 2-3 seeds per pot, in many cases they all germinate and a cull is required.)

The second tray went into soil yesterday... so I guess we expect to see them at the end of the week.

The source codes are:

  • KY = our own seed
  • CS = Chiltern Seeds
  • NR = NR Tomatoes
  • F = Fatalii
  • VN = Victoriana Nursery
  • NN = Nicky's Nursery

No tomatoes from Real Seeds this year oddly. I would normally have got Amish Paste from them but I forgot and luckily Nicky's also stocks it.

That is our last original Jersey Giant seed from Fatalii... precious. Though our own seem to be true to variety I will b hoping to harvest seed from the original. (This was a freebie with a chilli order, but is now one of my top-3 favourite tomatoes.)

Hoping to be better about own own seed for most of this lot for next year.

@yvan I'll be watching for pics!! YAY!!! Nothing more comforting than those germinating teensy roots showing against the dark soil!

@yvan still waiting for ours to germinate, all from real seeds originally but self stored for a few years. Most are from 2 years ago as I didn't grow any last year. I'm hoping the seeds are still good.

Amish paste
Ukrainian purple
Early cherry
Sweet million

*New from real seeds this year.

@misingtale tomato seeds seem to have a very good shelf life at least, my Chiltern Seeds "black cherry" were packaged in 2021. Chiltern must have put something like 50+ seeds in there too as they haven't run out yet and we have grown them every year.

The Amish Paste are excellent, they're now our core volume passata tomato.

@yvan love the full GUI colourful logging! here it gets typed in the "everything" text log, and search used to keep track.

what's with the chamomile?

the local seasonal switch has firmly flipped here now: no rain for as far ahead as forecast - 10 days. Wasting time with the hoses, so going to need to reassemble irrigation!

And as well as the toms, 2 vars of courgette are leafed-up, and the "edible packaging" Hokkaido squash is germinating. Whoopee!

@wavesculptor we use docuwiki to keep notes, as of a couple of years ago anyway, I got sick of losing text notes kept in random locations. Mainly this is for my fairly intense chilli & other solenacea growing season, but we track other household notes there too. Recipies and stuff.

I need to get the cucurbits in soonish, usually an early April job for us.

The chamomile is a mild antifungal (there's some actual science behing this), but I am not sure how effective that really is... soaking in water is probably much the same for speedy germination, and not soaking (as I did for years) works fine too. I enjoy the small ritual of making the tea, putting some aside, then drinking the tea.
