It is with great sadness that I am doing what I would once have thought unthinkable. Following Salim Abdool Karim's superb Faraday Lecture 10 days ago, i have decided to return my own Faraday prize, awarded in 2014.

The silence of the Royal Society in the face of Elon Musk's rampage (a member of the RS since 2018) across US science is incomprehensible to me.

We must all draw the line somewhere in the face of authoritarian attacks and this is mine.

A sequel to the "tool for the job" flame-thrower-toast, axe-your-nuts, 4x4 pint delivery... Petrol generators, next-least-appropriate tool after 4x4s.

Neighbour was using his a lot and I enquired why, with an adequate solar PV system and dawn-till-dusk sun. I've not needed a generator since someone cremated my propane combined-heat-and-power self-build one, in about 2009.

Neighbour was lining a van, similarly to how I had done some years ago too, with 4 mm plywood -- the kind with 2 VERY thin hard skins and a core of pithy poplar. I pointed-out that if you score both sides with a sharp Stanley knife and a straight edge, the stuff just snaps cleanly, easy as an ice-cream wafer.

Neighbour was not impressed. "I had a lot to do" he said [note - similar size van] "and the table saw needs 3 kW". The theatrical importance of noise, fumes, fuss and size?

Anyone who wondered, just back from another month's internet outage. Nothing personal, Mastodon, followers. Should be a bit more reliable now. Can't say sorting it was highest on the priority list, even if top of the frustration-list.

The garden has been chasing me like crazy as spring flip-flops into summer. 30 deg C a few afternoons ago, 11 deg C last night.

Hopefully some #growYourOwn on-the-steep-South-side-of-a-Portuguese-mountain progress reports soon.
