I love my Mac but stuff like this drives me up a wall. When Spotlight acts up, I want to rebuild the Spotlight index. These are the official instructions on how to do it: "Add your startup drive to the exclusions field... WAIT A FEW SECONDS... then remove it, then quit System Settings.”

HEAVEN FORBID there would be a cute little button in System Settings > Spotlight that says "Rebuild Spotlight Index” that we could push.

@tvaziri People could say something like "Move to GNU / Linux" and stuff. But I tell you that: On GNU / Linux you kind of expect everything to be slightly broken, because you know that people did the software on their spare time.

BUT...

Because of that you are never actually mad at the operating system. If you are realistic about it it meets your expectations exactly. And plus, you have way less enshittification. Win win.

@tvaziri
and also, what even is the definition of ‘a few' and if I don't wait a few, will it fail? or if I do wait a few, but it needs a few more than a few will it fail? Phew.

(also, thanks, because I tried other methods that didn't work to fix my horribly bugged results so hopefully this *does* fix it?)

@tvaziri
This seems to have worked?
I don't quite trust it yet as I've attempted this several times before but everything is showing up correctly!
@tvaziri @siracusa HOW MANY SECONDS? What if the little process gets hitched and doesn't trigger!? 😩
@tvaziri Computers can only do so much. That's where you come in! 🤪
@tvaziri @siracusa also maybe a setting to not try to index any usb storage that’s connected, like say, an e-reader, and as a result keeping it from being ejected.

@matthubble @tvaziri @siracusa This weekend our little EMO Pet's SD card went bad and I replaced it. I copied all the necessary files into the new card, formated in FAT32 and... it didn't work.

It was because of .DS_Store and .Spotlight-V100, the little robot didn't know what to do with those things.

@tvaziri Probably too late to help Todd, but Onyx is a really good utility for doing this and a whole bunch of other similar tasks.

@tvaziri everybody knows one has to hold command and option as the finder boots 😇

(Well, at least that's how it was before macOS X)

@tvaziri Just use mdutil. If you're aware enough to see spotlight needs a rebuilt why are you wasting your time outside terminal?
@sjsmac @tvaziri Some of like the Mac *because* it has a GUI, not despite it having a GUI

@tvaziri Say what you will about Steve Jobs, but if he ran into *ANY* of these niggling, "Pebble In Your Shoe" annoyances, entire departments would get fired...

How many accidental screenshots of his wake-up alarm do you think he would endure before he told Jony Ive, "Fuck Symmetrical Purity!"

How many times would his "Airdrop" show "No People Found" — even after French Kissing each other's devices — before he'd get fed up and demand some kind of brute-force "Broadcast My Presence" button?

And how many times would he be like, "Remind me again why I should 'Reduce Protections' just because I reloaded a freakin' web page?!??"

@tvaziri I’ve had so many issues with Spotlight in particular breaking in strange ways somewhat regularly. It eventually drove me to switch to a 3rd party launcher. After Spotlight gained some basic clipboard functionality, I decided to give it a second chance, to try and remove some of the extra software I was running, and very quickly went right back to the 3rd party launcher.
